ay -- oy 0 pio clot el Capacity to be increased Growth could overload local sewage plant With the extensive growth ex- perienced in the past few years in Port Perry, town officials are star- ting to get concerned as to how long it will be before the services cur- rently in place will become out of date. Not wanting to wait until they had a possible emergency on their hands a few years down the road, Scugog Township has asked the Region to investigate the best method of in- creasing the sewage treatment plant capacity for the Port Perry Service area. At the last regular meeting of council, regional members voted to sanction a report from work's com- missioner Bill Twelvetrees that Scugog's request be considered dur- ing the 1988 budget talks. Sewage treatment for Port Perry is provided at the Nonquon River Water Pollution Control Plant, which consists of six lagoons having a capacity of .7 million Imperial gallons per day (MIGD). Treated effluent from the lagoons discharges into the Nonquon River which flows into Lake Scugog. The Ministry of Environment has set a maximum loading on the Nonquon of 50 pounds of the BOD5 per day and the existing lagoons are sized accordingly to match this max- imum loading. In 1986, connected population to the plant was 5,365 causing a flow of .565 MIGD. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 22, 1987 -- 3 "We are now in the process of preparing the 1988 budget and four- year forecast," said Twelvetrees. "One of the items which will be recommended for consideration by the Works Committee is a study to examine the region's sewage and water systems in detail in order to assess their capability of meeting the needs of the region over the next 20 years." He added it was his intention to recommend that consulting engineers be retained to assist in such a study, which would include examination of methods to expand the capacity of the Nonquon River Water Pollution Control Plant.
