20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 29, 1987 Community Care 10 years old A decade of caring Ten years ago on September 29, 1977 a group of twenty-five volunteers from various communi- ty groups and organizations in Scugog Township were brought together by the Scugog Social Plan- ning Council to develop the Com- munity Care program in Scugog. From the initial planning meetings until today, Scugog Com- munity Care has grown from six- teen frail elderly people assisted the first month to over three hundred helped each year through twelve dif- ferent programs. All of this is provided by volunteers and helpers (aged 13 to 90) who share a concern for those who need a little help along the way. Their efforts are supported by the co-ordinator of the program, Elizabeth Fulford. WHAT IS COMMUNITY CARE? Community Care is a non-profit organization of volunteers providing services to senior citizens and those in special need where services are not otherwise available within our community. They are administered by an elected Advisory Committee and are a member of Durham Region Community Care Association. VOLUNTEERS AND HELPERS PROVIDE: Local and long distance transportation to Doctors, Clinics and Hospitals. -- Local transportation for shop- ping, meetings and Luncheon Date. --~ Cleaning and other home help. -- Delivery of Meals on Wheels. -- Grasscutting and snow- shovelling. Minor home repairs and yardwork. - Errands. -- Income Tax preparation. -- Home visiting and Telephone security checks. -- Adult sitting. - Office, Foot Care, Luncheon Date receptionists and helpers. -- Information and referral regar- ding services and organizations in Scugog Township. These services are available throughout the Township of Scugog. Most services offered are not restricted to the telephone hours of 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. A nominal fee is paid to the volunteer or helper for some services: MEALS ON WHEELS In co-operation with Community Nursing Home and Community Memorial, meals are delivered at noon time, three days a week. Special Diets are available. LUNCHEON DATE Once a month volunteers drive seniors who are living alone or with " R.N. FOOT CARE People of any age who are not able to properly care for their feet are eligible to use the Foot Care Program provided by a Department of Health Nurse and a Community Care Nurse. INFORMATION SCUGOG Call the office for free, confiden- tial, information and referral regar- ding services available to people liv- ing anywhere in Scugog Township. Community organizations, Health and Social Service agencies, Senior Services, Ontario Travel booklets and Recreation groups are ex- amples of the resources available. The 1987 'For Your Information" pamphlet includes many telephone numbers of local services that are/ difficult to find in the telephone book. FUNDING Scugog Community Care (and other social services in Scugog Township) do not receive funds from United Way. This year they need to raise $4,200 to meet the budget. Current fundraising in- cludes a 50/50 raffle initiated by Pierre LeDuc with the proceeds the \ i= tia» A shared 50/50 by Scugog Communi- ty Care and Community Memorial Hospital. Up to 70 percent of the budget is provided through Home Support Funding from the Ontario Ministry of Community & Social Services. The Township of Scugog provides an annual grant. Local churches, service clubs and in- dividuals are other sources of ma- jor support. VOLUNTEERS. While they are always needing volunteers and helpers in all their programs, the most pressing need at this time is for volunteer drivers for local, Oshawa or Toronto medical appointments and local business and shopping, and to deliver Meals on Wheels throughout the Township.
