FF !* 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 6, 1987 " Classic beauties About a dozen car buffs stopped over in Port Perry Sunday after- noon and the gleaming autos from i ii | § © yesteryear created something of a HTH p-- » a stir among many people who took a EAL rv close look. There was a spiffy 1955 T-bird con- vertible, fire engine red, one of the truly fine cars ever built by Ford. Or how about a light blue and white 56 Chevy? Or a Packard, '51 model. Now, there's a nostalgic name from the past. The owners of these fine old cars are all members of the Durham Region chapter of the Antique and Classic Car Club of Canada, and they were on their annual Fall Col- our Tour when they stopped off in Port Perry. Certainly one of the most eye- catching of the cars was '27 Cadillac limousine, built by G.M. in Oshawa and lovingly restored over eight years by present owner George Tomlinson. Finished in black and grey, this "deluxe model" sold for $4450 in 1927, a fair hunk of change even in pre-Depression times. Restoring this car meant countless hours of work for the Oshawa owner who first took it apart completely and then put it back together again, piece by piece. It is a truly striking machine from the wide wooden wheel spokes, all the gleaming chrome to the courtesy lights outside that come on when the doors open. Powered by a flat head V-8, this Cadillac cruises v Jim Lunn of Bowmanville holding his infant grandson Kyle stands in front of his '32 Chev second look. Maroon and black are the original colours. And it has a 3-speed transmission and a 6-cyl. overhead valve Chevy motor. And one of the most unique classics in the Fall Tour was the 1936 Ford Cabriolet convertible owned and cherished by Sid Stevens of Pickering. There were only 1900 built at the Ford plant in Oakville and they car- ried a hefty Depression price tag of $1200. What sets this car apart from most other Classics is that it is com- pletely original, right down to the gleaming black paint job. In fact, Sid said the only non- original parts are the convertible roof and the tires. He's owned it for 26 years. Two previous owners lived in the Bracebridge area and only drove it in summers. It has about 66,000 original miles and is powered by a flat-head V8 motor. When asked whether he will touch up a few stone chips in the paint on the front bumpers, Sid shrugged and said no. That would take away from its original condition. When asked how much it is worth today, Sid said he has it insured for $21,000, but it's not for sale at any price.
