re _--_----myvpyp ym pert mH |} 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 14, 1987 Regional councillors have authorized a preliminary investiga- tion by an engineering firm into the value of a piece of property in Scugog, believed to be a source of gravel for Durham. In 1973, the County of Ontario pur- chased a hundred acre farm at the intersection of Regional Roads 21 and 23 west of Manchester in the former Township of Reach. The pro- perty has not been developed as a gravel pit but currently serves as a location for the Scugog depot of Durham. In 1987 general levy budget pro- vided for the preparation of an ap- plication for a gravel extraction per- mit from the Ministry of Natural Resources to allow the property to be used as a gravel pit, at an estimated cost of $30,000. However, Golder Associates, a * consulting geotechnical and mining engineering firm with considerable experience, has submitted a pro- posal to carry out an evaluation of the site at a cost of $15,000. Works commissioner Bill Twelvetrees told council the supp- ly of gravel in the Durham area was depleting, forcing the region to truck it in from farther afield at a . considerable cost. He went on to reassure those gathered that the region had no intention of getting in- to the commercial gravel business, but would use any sand and gravel found on the property for their own purposes. Twelvetrees said most major municipalities had a gravel pit of their own as gravel is a major com- modity used to backfill, construct "Region looking for gravel at Scugog site roads and during sewer construc. tion. He said any sand on the proper- ty could be used throughout the region as winter sand for roads. He admitted the region had been offered $400,000 for the property as it now stood, but said a sale was not considered because it would not serve the purpose of the region in the long term with regard to ensur- ing an adequate supply of gravel. Engineers from Golder are ex- pected to start drilling for gravel samples immediately. Sport centre info meeting An information meeting has been scheduled for Thursday evening, October 22, to try to find out if the people of Port Perry and Scugog Township would like to see some Post Office (From page 1) December of this year. Postal customers in Nestleton will be notified of the change this week, he stated. Three weeks ago there had been fears in the community that postal service (counter) might be moved to the Post Office in Blackstock as Canada Post and the previous operator of counter service in Nestleton were not able to reach an agreement on the terms of a new contract. Peter Fitton, owner of the Couu- try Store in Nestleton, said at the time that the offer made to him by Canada Post was not enough to make it financially worthwhile for him to run his store and the counter service. The offer to Mr.-Fitton amounted to about $1500 annually. The year long contract between Mr. Malcolm and Canada Post is worth about $5,000, said Mr. Conn. kind of an in-door sports facility in the community. The meeting has been organized by Gerry Jonkheer of Gerry's Pro- duce and Distributing and by local lawyer Brian Davies. They hope to be able to find out from the meeting just what level of public and community support and interest there is for an indoor sports- Scugog Choral Society fitness facility, something which the town does not have at this time. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which gets underway at 6:00 PM October 22 and will be held in the Back Room at Emiel's Place Restaurant on Queen Street.
