McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks opened their Junior C hockey season with a flourish over the weekend with a Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and Central Seven's David Asselstine had the honours of sharing the opening face-off ceremonies Sunday night at the Scugog Arena to kick off another pair of victories over the Trenton Golden Hawks and the Wellington Dukes. The MoJacks really turned on the season of Junior C hockey in Port Perry. At right jets as they white-washed the Hawks 13-0 Friday night in Trenton and then steam-rolled over the Dukes 9-3 in the home opener Sun- is MoJack captain Andy Sutch and the Wellington Dukes captain is Darryl Yuill. The MoJacks won the game 9-3 as they. took control midway through the second period. PeeWees thrash Cobourg The Port Perry Pee Wee Legion- naires have started off their season with a strong 9-2 win over Cobourg. In the first period Cobourg outshot the Port team by a slight margin of 7to 5, but with great goaltending by Shawn Larocque the Cobourg team was unable to score. At 8:27 Jason Cochrane scored Port's first goal after picking up the puck from teammate Steve Laird and making an end to end rush. Jeff Andrews fired a shot at the Cobourg net and Nathan Brown was there to pick up the rebound and score Port's next goal. The fans screamed with excite ment in the second period when goaltender Larocque skated almost to the blue line to stop a Cobourg player from having a one man rusn. The excitement mounted when Cobourg scored with a great pass- ing play to bring the game closer. After that the Legionnaires took control and scored 6 goals in the se- cond period. Duane Empringham caught the goalie napping and slid a shot right between the goalies legs with the assist going to Peter King. Brad Moase came up with a great scrimmage goal after a lot of hard work from his linemate's Nathan Brown and Duane Empringham. Jason Cochrane notched his second goal of the game with a sleek pass from teammate Steve Laird and Jeff Andrews. Captain Andy Sutch had a big night for the MoJacks in Trenton as he scored four times and assisted on two others, while Dave Burnett had two goals and two assists. Other markers were notched by Chris Ed- mondson, Rob Metcalfe, Greg War- riner, Dave Culbert, Len Giacalone, Bob St. Jules and Rob Baker. Paul Goreski picked up the shut- out for the MoJacks as he turned aside 34 Hawk shots. The MoJacks made life miserable for Steve Tufts in the Trenton net as they fired 51 pucks at him. Although the game was chippy, there were just 11 minor penalties handed out, five to Trenton and six to the MoJacks. The MoJacks spread the goals out pretty evenly in this game, with four in the first period, five in the mid- dle frame and four more in the final 20 minutes. One of the 13 goals came on the power play. The Hawks had just 12 skaters and two goalies in uniform for the game. On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, Mayor Jerry Taylor did the honours with the official opening face-off and he was assisted by Dave Asselstine from the Central Seven organization. Although the final score was 9-3 in the MoJacks favour, the Wellington Dukes proved to be tough, capable opponents as the game was close un- til mid-way through the second period. The Dukes got on the board first with a goal by Howard Dowdie. In fact most of the fans in the Scugog Arena were still ordering their pre- game coffee when he scored after just ten seconds of play. But it didn't take the MoJacks very long to get that one back as Craig Menzies controlled the puck down the left boards and fed a pass to St. Jules in front of the Dukes cage. The MoJacks were on the power play at the time. And they were also on the power play at 14:45 when Darren Nesbitt took a pass at the blue line and drill- ed his patented slap shot low to the corner of the net. The Dukes were still in the game, however, as Paul Ireland banked one off the goal post to even the score at 2-2. And that's the way the close checking first period ended. But the MoJacks slowly began to take control of the game in the se- cond period and it was forward Rob Baker who got things going at the 4:30 mark when he snapped in a re- bound. And then at 11:03 with the MoJacks enjoying a power play, John Harman carried over the blue line and left a nifty drop pass on the stick of Nesbitt who wasted no time with a bullet to the corner. Rookie Kevin Long got his first goal in a MoJack uniform just a dozen seconds later with an assist from Rob Metcalfe. Long cashed in his own rebound, to make it 5-2 The Dukes made a goaltender change at this point with Allan Bigg taking over from Lonnie Lewis and just past the 12 minute mark Dowdie picked up his second of the night as he beat Paul Goreski from the left side to bring the Dukes to within two goals. Then it was Andy Sutch with an outstanding individual effort to give the MoJacks a 6-3 lead and this was probably the turning point in the game. As the seconds ticked away in the middle period Greg Warriner con- trolled the puck in the Dukes zone and fed a pass to Sutch in the slot. He pulled the trigger on a hard wrist shot that hit the goaltender's pads and trickled into the net just as the period ended. Sutch was off balance when he got the shot away and he took a hard body check in the pro- cess. But the goal counted and gave MoJacks a 6-3 lead. The third period belonged pretty much to the MoJacks as Steve" Ashby scored on the power play to make it 7-3 and then at the 15 minute mark with the teams playing three- aside, defenseman Thane Ellis showed some great hustle. He scooped up a loose puck at the Mo- Jacks line, raced the length of the ice and put a move on the Duke goalie. Ellis is a big guy and he real- ly turned on the after burners to leave a couple of Dukes behind. At 16:34 defenseman Clay Demp- sey rounded out the scoring for the MoJacks with a fine slap shot from 25 feet out that sailed un-touched over the glove hand of Allan Biggs. This game was closer than the score would indicate. Paul Goreski faced 28 shots in the MoJack cage and he had to be very sharp at times to record his second straight win. The MoJacks were called for 17 minor penalties as referee Ted Reid clamped down on both teams. The Dukes took 18 minors and forward Brad Prince was slapped with a match penalty for grabbing the face mask on Rob Baker's helmet. Along the forward lines, Kevin Long and Dean Smethurst looked impressive as did John Harman who worked hard all evening. John Hart- ford and Greg Warriner were effec- tive killing penalties as the team did not give up a power play goal to the Dukes. With eight points in the first two games, Andy Sutch is off to a quick start in the scoring department, while Darren Nesbitt isn't far behind with six points in two outings. The MoJacks are idle until Friday night when they pay a visit to Well- ington for a return encounter with the Dukes. And then Sunday night, October 25 at the Scugog Arena, they will face a stern test as the Lakefield Chiefs pay a visit. The Chiefs are the all- Ontario defending Junior C cham- pions and they are always a tough hockey outfit. Game time is 7:30 PM.
