Bio a iE MR Ee st SE we chaos FESR a SE 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 20, 1987 Port Perry visitors admire streetscape '"Many business people have upgraded and renovated the main street with class." That's one of the comments of a recent visitor to Port Perry in his letter to the editor on page 5 of this issue of the Star. The letter goes on to talk about Port Perry's new lighting standards, the Victorian park benches and gar- bage containers, as well as the refurbished buildings and suggests that the property owners of his community should look to Port Perry as an example for theirs. Unfortunately, some members of Scugog Township are not as proud of our business community as others. Since the street beautification project was put in place ear- ly this summer, there has been both vandalism and theft of the new fixtures. To date, there are two park benches missing from the damage to at least four of the ten garbage containers. It's nice to see that visitors to our community are im- pressed with what has been accomplished to date .... it's just too bad that every beautification project is prone to the senseless antics of vandals. "What about a dog which bites so- meone who's on the owner's proper- ty?" asked Ward 4 councillor. Neil McLaughlin. And Ward 1 councillor Yvonne Christie said it's perfectly accep table for people to keep watch dogs, but she added those dogs should be chained or fenced, and if the guard dogs are roaming on the property there should be warning signs posted. Referring to a most recent inci- dent in which a ten year old girl was mauled by a German Shepherd and required hospital treatment for the bites, councillor Graham said "1 think a child should be able to go - door to door to sell school chocolate bars and not be attacked by a dog. The council discussed the issue at length and instructed the Ad- ministrator to get copies of by-laws from other municipalities to see how they deal with this problem. Meanwhile, on a related topic, the council agreed that the Scugog Animal Control Van should be radio equipped to allow the Control Of- ficer to respond more quickly to complaints about roaming dogs. "I think it (the radio) is a small investment to improve the service over dog complaints," said the Mayor. Animal Control officer Ann Bar- rett patrols both Uxbridge and Scugog Townships. Lack of a radio Vicious dog by-law in the van sometimes means that by the time Ms. Barrett hears from the office about a dog complaint and travels to the scene, the dog is long gone. This seems to be especially true in rural areas and hamlets in the eastern area of Scugog Township where there are a considerable number of dog complaints from residents. 158 Queen Street PORT PERRY PET SHOP 985-8065 DURHAM REGION'S LARGEST PET SHOP ALL Merchandise Included.
