3 ? YMCA awards night The Oshawa YWCA's Sixth An- nual Durham Region Women of Distinction Awards Dinner will be held November 5th at the Oshawa Holiday Inn. The public is invited to share in this special celebration to honour women in the region for their excep- tional contribution to community life. Awards will be presented to Women of Distinction in each of the following categories: the Arts or Multiculturalism; Community Ser- vice; Women in the Workforce; Young Woman of Distinction. The keynote speaker will be lawyer N. Jane Pepino, Vice- chairman of the Metro Toronto Police Commission. Ms. Pepino is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Texas and currently a partner with the firm of Aird & Berlis, Toronto. In addition to professional duties, Ms. Pepino was appointed to the Ontario Human Rights Commission and became a founding member of the Race Relations Division. In 1982, Ms. Pepino resigned these positions to become the first woman ap- pointed to the Metro Toronto Police Commission. Serving as a Commissioner, she chaired the Task Force on Public Violence Against Women and Children. Ms. Pepino serves as President of Metrac, formed to im- plement the recommendations of the Task Force on Public Violence, as Honourary Campaign Chair for the Barbara Schlifer Commemor- tive Clinic, as representative of the City of Toronto Equal Opportunity Advisory Committee, on the Na- 'tional Board of Canadian Council of Christians and Jews and as a Direc- tor of the Festival of Festivals. Ms. Pepino was appointed to the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, is a member of the Board of Directors of COIN (Com- puterized Ontario Investment Net- work), Chair of the Rogers Cablecasting Fairness and Safeguards Committee and on the Board of Trustees for the United Way. Obituary Peter Vugts Peter Joseph Vugts passed away at the Community Memorial Hospital, Port Perry on Saturday, September 5, 1987. He was in his 83rd year. Peter Vugts was born in Holland, March 25, 1905. He married Rita Maria Raaymakers on May 16, 1933. They came to Canada March, 1953. Farm- ed in Nova Scotia for 12 years. In 1964, they moved to Ontario and farmed for 2 years. After farming, Peter worked for Reids Flower Shop in Oshawa. He retired in 1975. Peter Joseph Vugts was the dear- ly loved husband of Rita, dear father of Joseph of Brampton, John of Lit- tle Britain, Nelly (Mrs. Robert Kuehl) of Cresswell and Anne (Mrs. Robert Jones) of Janetville. Loved grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Brother of Toon, Marinus, Jo, Fran and Meit, all of Holland. Rested at the Wagg Funeral Home in Port Perry.
