Operation Scugog helps the less fortunate PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 27, 1987 -- 13 Help now, not only just before Christmas For the past 14 years, Operation Scugog has been working quietly to help brighten Christmas for the less fortunate in the community. The organization co-ordinates the collection and distribution of Christmas food hampers and gifts in the Township. The demand for this service has gone up steadily since it began 14 years ago, and in 1987, more than 140 families will receive hampers and gifts. The organization receives con- siderable support from the com- munity in the form of cash dona- tions, gifts and food hampers, and committee member Barb Carnegie told the Star last week that the organization greatly appreciates this support. However, she said, if there are people thinking of helping out this Christmas, the time to get in touch with Operation Scugog is now, not mid-December. Monte Carlo HAIR FASHION 11 Water Street - Port Perry 985-3684 Operation Scugog is now in the process of planning and preparing for its work this Christmas, and it would help in the planning process if people make their commitments 'of help now. "We (the committee) really ap- preciate the assistance from the community, but it would help us if people contact the committee now," she stated. The Committee is made up of four people including Mrs. Carnegie, HALLOWE'EN SPECIAL 20% Off PERMS with Jayne & Debbie from October 26 to November 7/87. Rev. Nancy Waterman, Louise Hartney and social worker Anne Wanninkhof. Mrs. Carnegie said anyone wishing to help out with a cash dona- tion or the preparation of a Christmas food hamper should con- tact her at 985-3651. Operation Scugog also maintains a special fund for emergency uses under the discretion of the public health nurses, social workers or others recognized in the field of public assistance. This fund is under the trustee ship of Mary Cannon from the Social Planning Council, Louise Hartney, and Bank of Com- merce manager Jeff Fell. So don't wait for mid-December when the Christmas lights are up and people are starting to get into the Christmas spirit.
