Hospital Auxiliary report by Luella Graham The Hospital Auxiliary meeting was held on Oct. 19th with 18 ladies present. The President opened the meeting with all repeating the Aux- iliary prayer in unison. Joan Godley volunteer co- ordinator was then welcomed and told us she now has 46 volunteers. She then thanked the Auxiliary for the two thermos jugs, which they had donated and they are doing a lovely job in keeping coffee and tea hot for the patients. The Secretary and Treasurer then gave their report and Corr. Secretary had received five thank you notes, and two cheques. Hazel Coates wool convener showed some lovely knitted articles which had been turned in and the Auxiliary would sincerely appreciate anyone who could give of their time to do some knitting, especially baby out- fits. Hazel has wool to pass out for this work. Mr. Brown was with us, and told us plans are going along for the ex- pansion to the hospital and they hope to have an non-smoking en- vironment by June 1988. We do thank the family of the late Florence Jeffrey for their donation of a folding table used for the activa- tion programme. Good reports were given from the convention which was held in Peterborough, those at- tending were: Elaine, lleen, Thelma, Joyce, Luella and Mary. Each member is asked to bring in an article for Xmas to be put in the Tuck Shop at the next meeting. Also membership fees for 1988 will be col- lected at the next meeting. A big thank you goes out to Valu-mart for their continuation of credit for cash register tapes. Folks, please keep your tapes, they are still valuable. They can be left at the hospital or with any member of the auxiliary Our bake sale will be coming up Dec. 4th at the hospital. More about this at our next meeting. At this time Thelma moved we adjourn Seconded by Jean by Linda Darby, President The Durham Women Teachers' Association Executive, in conjunc- tion with Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario, is delighted to bring the Primary Education Campaign to Durham on November 5, 1987 at Lakeside Public School in Ajax at 7:30 PM. The Primary Campaign is design- ed to help improve conditions in primary classrooms. The Short Term Goal is to raise the level of awareness among educators, parents and the public about the needs of young children in school in order that they will develop their full potential. In addition, together we will be developing short term ac- tion strategies aimed at the collec- tive bargaining process, politicians, and the Ministry of Education. It is hoped that a local network of con- cerned individuals and special in- terest groups will emerge to plan and carry out a variety of action strategies. Our Long Term Goal is to raise sufficient public pressure to change existing legislation and decision-making which will result in targeted funds for primary classrooms and programmes that will enable school boards to: ** Lower class size ** Provide preparation time to all primary teachers * Develop and implement long term professional development ac- tivities for primary teachers Call to improve primary classes * Allocate adequate physical space for activity-based programmes ** Appoint primary consultants and other needed specialists * Provide quality resource materials in sufficient quantities for activity-based programmes Primary children should be fund- ed at the highest level. This does not mean that the needs of junior and in- termediate teachers and children will be ignored. Rather, we are beginning our campaign for a fairer level of funaing of the elementary panel at the logical beginning point, the Primary Division. In addition, we are not suggesting that money allocated to other elementary grades be shifted to primary, but rather that New Monies be granted to these early years. Guest speakers at the meeting will be Ada Scherman and Helen Penfold. Ada Scherman, is present- ly an Associate Professor, the Chair- man of the Institute of Child Study and the Principal of the Laboratory School at the Institute. She has been involved in early childhood educa- tion for many years. Helen Penfold is the vice-president of the Federa- tion of Women Teachers' Associa- tions of Ontario. k It is hoped that parents, trustees, administrators and teachers from Durham will attend the meeting and follow-up actions will be taken.
