And the club recently acquired several craft from Thunder Bay, Ontario. The boats are safe- ly tucked away for the winter in the barn at ». the Hugh Baird farm near Seagrave. But you'll be seeing a lot of them on Lake Scugog once spring rolls around. In this photo are club president Lang Cope at left and racing enthusiast Robert Baird. (See story for details). Pee Wee B's split two On Wednesday October 28 the Stone Realty Pee Wee's travelled to Manvers to play in another league action game. This proved to be a real tight checking contest with the Stone gang coming up a little: short in a 3-2 loss. In the first period Port opened the scoring on a nice shot by Brendon Agnew assisted by Chad Garvock and Adam Johnston. The lead was short lived as Manvers tied the JR. game before the end of the first period. The second period saw Manvers pop two more goals to take a 3-1 lead early in the period. With only 37 seconds on the clock Chad Garvock scored Port's second goal assisted by Brendon Agnew and Adam Johnston. The number of boats owned by the Scugog Canoe Club increased substantially in October, thanks to a trip to Thunder Bay by Lang Cope, Irv Gibson and Gord McNeil of Toronto. They brought back to Port Perry six racing canoes of various types and the Club now has about $50,000 worth of canoes on inventory. The canoes from Thunder Bay had been sitting in storage, un-used after a canoe club in that communi- ty folded. Mr. Cope, president of the Scugog Canoe Club, received per- mission from the Canadian Canoe- ing Association to take possession of the boats. All he had to do was make the trip to Thunder Bay and bring them back. The three men made that trip earlier this month and the six canoes (K1, K1 mini, 2C1's, a C2 and a C4) are safely in storage waiting for the start of the 1988 canoeing season. Mr. Cope said last week the canoes from Thunder Bay will re- quire a bit of work over the winter to put them in shape for the coming season, He said he is very pleased with the number of canoes the Club has been able to acquire in its first year of operation, and he'll be working over the winter to get at least one K4. Mr. Cope said he had hoped the Thunder Bay trip would net the Club a war canoe. However, when they arrived in Thunder Bay, they learn- ed that the war canoe had been set a-drift earlier this summer, recovered by police and then auc- tioned off in a police sale when nobody claimed it. Much to the disappointment of Mr. Cope, he was told by police that the war canoe, valued at about $3,000, had fetched $100 in the police auction. "I'm trying to track down the per- son who bought it to see if he's will- ing to sell it to the Scugog Canoe Club for what he paid for it," said Mr. Cope. Meanwhile, with the inventory of boats growing, the Scugog Canoe Club is already starting to prepare for the 1988 season. Mr. Cope told the Star the Club's objective is to promote three kinds of canoeing in Scugog Township: pleasure, marathon racing and sprint racing. Late in January, the Club plans to hold a public Open House and launch a membership drive. And there is a very good chance that ear- ly next summer, the Club will get together with Canoe Clubs from Oakville and Missassauga to put on a Bantam age (under 14) Regatta on Lake Scugog. The Scugog Chamber of Com- merce donated $1500 to the club and part of that money was used to get the canoes from Thunder Bay.
