OSHAWA { olan) ol(l(z } me council last week by Oshawa coun- cillor Brian Nicholson and Whitby rep Tom Edwards and both express- ed concern that free trade may have a negative affect on the Region. "If we (council) fail (to get involv- ed in the issue) we are putting at jeopardy thousands and thousands of families in Durham Region whe are dependant on the auto in- dustry," said Edwards. Durham chief administrative of- ficer Donald Evans warned council that the Region does not have per- sonnel on staff with the expertise to examine free trade in detail, and this may mean hiring an outside consultant from time to time to work for the Region. Several councillors, including finance chairman Jim Witty ex- pressed the opinion that the free trade issue will impact severely on Durham Region, especially if the Auto Pact becomes part of it. Councillor Nicholson acknowledg- ed that the free trade issue is a com- plex one, but he said it's imperative that Durham Region study the fine print over the next couple of years and "Have a voice in the fine tuning of any final agreement." 'Soccer Club annual meeting Thursday The Scugog Youth Soccer Club "will try again this week to hold its annual general meeting. The meeting had been slated for last week but had to be cancelled when only six people showed up. Members of the Club are hoping there will be better attendance this Thursday evening November 5 when the meeting will be held at 7:30 PM in the municipal council chambers. The main item of business on the agenda will be the election of a new executive and board of directors. If you are interested in soccer, or have a child playing this sport, maybe you should consider working for the organization. At least attend the meeting November 5 to find out what's happening with soccer in Scugog Township.
