The Eagles started off in full flight as team captain Brad Menzies blistered a slap shot into the upper right hand corner, assisted by Jamie Menzies and Steve Connors. Port added to their slim lead less than two minutes later on an unassisted effort from Clair Cornish at 11:27. After recovering from the initial shock, Lindsay dug in and played a little more aggressively making Port work all the harder. With only thirty-three seconds left in the first period, Paul Wylie netted one as Todd Taylor drew the assist. This ended the first period, and the Eagles headed into a very busy six- goal second period. The first goal was scored by Derek Fitzgerald with assists going to Todd Taylor and Kevin Gibson. It was just three seconds later when Derek Fitzgerald connected again to up the lead by five with assists go- ing to Todd Taylor and Kevin Gibson. By this time the Eagles were on a rampage and it was John Lally who added to the cake walk as he pumped one in assisted by linemate Clair Cornish. With less than two minutes left in the second period, defenceman Andrew Steele flipped one past a dizzy netminder to make Over Bewdley and Cobourg The Pineridge Sports Atom No. 2 team had their busiest weekend yet coming out on the winning end with 2 wins in league play and a tie in an exhibition game. On Friday Port Perry played an exhibition game against the Little N.H.L, Black Hawk team from Oshawa. The game started off slow- ly but the pace picked up midway through the first period when Oshawa scored off the shinpad of our Matt Morris (a case of being in the right place at the wrong time). Port came back and scored two goals onic minute apart, the first by Craig Laird and the second by Graham Holt with assists going to Ian McCready and Kirk Swain. Matt Morris had two good defensive plays by stopping two 2 on 1 breakaways as did James Paterson making two outstanding saves. In the third period Ricky Olaisen had two breakaways but was denied a goal until the line of Ian McCready and Graham Holt joined him in put- ting Port ahead 3-2. Unfortunately for Port Perry, Oshawa scored and First two goals Port Perry Home Hardware played the Oshawa girls on Sunday with the score of 13-2. For the first time since playing, the girls came away with 2 goals. The first goal was scored in the first half by Jenny Storms. The second goal came shortly after by Cara Vanderslaght. Katie Senyk, the goalie worked very hard and stop- ped more shots on net than she let in. Keep up the good work girls and maybe we will win our first soon. Malmont Atoms in close ones On the weekend, the Hunstville Minor Hockey Association hosted their third annual atom tournament. Our Malmont Farms Atoms were one of twelve teams from as far away as Barry's Bay and Ernestown. Most games were very close and exciting. Penetang and Malmont were in- volved in a rare 0-0 game. The goaltenders were excellent par- ticularly our own Steven Gilbert. Scott Heasman continually frustrated the opposition with outstanding defensive work. The Jeremy Geer, Chad Kearns and Jay Tredway line had an excellent game. Joey Broadworth had a cou- ple of excellent scoring oppor- tunities but was beaten by the Penetang goaltender. Each team had a minor penalty. Orillia was Malmont's opponent in game two. This was a frustrating game for Malmont. They played well but seemed victimized by some penalty calls at crucial times. Mid- way in the first period Joey Broad- worth deflected an excellent David Bourgeois pass for the games first goal. Orillia tied the game before the period ended. Orillia's second period goal proved enough for their 2-1 win. Mike Pashley was busy and excellent in the Malmont goal. The defense was sound in this game with Clay Scott having a very effective game. Up front, Chad Kearns and Kenton LeFort had very strong two way games. - Finally, Malmont's fate in this tournament hinged on their third game of the day. A strong Gravenhurst team provided the op- position. Whether it was Gravenhurst's excellent effort or Malmont's sporadic effort, the Mal- mont team was down 3-0 early in the game. Finally, Jay Tredway, with determined effort and leadership scored two goals fifteen seconds apart. Chad Kearns assisted on one of the goals. This sparked Malmont and their efforts showed. Brent Harper tied the game. Then Neil Mueller coralled a good Kenton LeFort lead pass and went in to beat a good Gravenhurst goaltender. Malmont now had the lead with less than four minutes to go. Great! But, Gravenhurst had a hockey player named Gary Sontag. In two minutes this young hockey player scored three of his five goals to give Gravenhurst a 6-4 victory. This was a good experience for the Malmont team against some very good competition. It was reassuring to learn they can compete well. There should also be the realization that winning requires a solid effort the entire game from every player. While the Malmont Green Machine failed to win in this tourna- ment they should be up for the next one this coming weekend in Ennismore. it 7-0 assisted by Toddy Taylor and Kevin Gibson. Derek Fitzgerald completed his hat trick at the 0:56 mark of the second period with Clair Cornish and Phil McBride chalking up the helpers. Lindsay finally mounted some of- fence at the 0:21 mark but headed into the third period with the score standing Port Perry Eagles 8 - Lind- say 1. With exactly one minute played in the third, Jamie Menzies found himself all alone in front of the net off a pass from Brad Menzies as he netted Port's ninth. Kevin Gibson scored his first of the year to make the score a perfect ten assisted by Twiggy Connors and Chief Menzies. Port's last goal came at the 4:00 'Atom B's post 2 wins, tie the game ended a 3-3 tie. It should be noted that one spec- tator was overheard saying that if Billy Zaparanuik skated any faster he would melt the ice. On Saturday night after an early morning practise Port Perry played their league game against a team from Bewdley coming out on the winning end 4-1. Bewdley jumped in- to the lead and held it until the third period when Port Perry scored four unanswered goals. Goalscorers were Billy Zaparanuik, Ian Shrigley, Craig Laird and Ricky Olaisen. Assists went to Craig Laird, Matt Morris, Jeff Vernon, Kent Taylor, Ian McCready, Kirk Swain and Greg Thompson. This game was the hardest game the Atom No. 2 team has played this season. The Bewdley team played aggressively showing Port Perry the art of body contact (just ask Ian Shrigley and Greg Thompson). Special mention to Scot Prechitko and James Paterson for strong net minding and Ian Shrigley, Daryl Bourgeois, Graham Holt and Ricky Olaisen for playing a very strong game. On Sunday, a very tired Atom No. 2 team travelled to Cobourg and came home victorious winning 4-2. Once again the opposition scored first and Port had to come from behind. The many hours of practise paid off as Port Perry came back and scored 4 goals. Scot Prechitko made several on the line saves and "Legs" Zaparanuik made many a good take out. Port's first goal came as a result of a scramble in front of the net and Craig Laird assisted by Kirk Swain and Kent Taylor popped it in- to the net. In the second period Graham Holt and Kirk Swain scored with assists going to Ricky Olaisen, Richie Tripp, Kirk Swain and Kent Taylor. Greg Thompson had the opposition going head over heels as he made several good take-outs as did Matt Morris and Jeff Vernon. With one minute left in the third period Ricky Olaisen assisted by Graham Holt "'slid" one into the net (his mom finally saw one of his goals). Jeff Vernon showed excellent stick handling in this game and lan Shrigley left many Cobourg players scattered on the ice with his dazzl- ing skating style. Cobourg scored the final goal of the game. The Pineridge Atom No. 2 team now has had a taste of what lengthy tournament play will be like. The boys have two games this week - Wed. Nov. 11 in Newcastle and on Sat. Nov. 14 at 7:30 in Port Perry against the team from Orono. Be there -- don't miss it! PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 10, 1987 -- 29 minute mark by Phil McBride with _ assists going to Keith Roberge and Brad Menzies. Lindsay's last goal came at the 0:03 second mark to end the game with the Eagles coming out on top 11-2. A congratulations is extended to leam captain Brad Menzies as Eagles coast to easy 11-2 win over Lindsay previous to this game he scored five goals in a game against Stouffville. The Eagles play home every Mon- day night at 7:30, so come on out and support minor hockey, and help cheer on these Eagles. The Eagles host their own tournament this weekend, so we hope to see you there. Lakers win "B"' The Scugog Realty Lakers travell- ed to Millbrook this past weekend to compete in the Millbrook Oldtimers 11th Annual Tournament. In game one the Lakers had to come from behind with two late goals to tie Otonobee at four each. On Friday night the Lakers fell victim to the Cavan Blazers by a three to one score. Although they outplayed the opposition the Lakers missed numerous scoring oppor- tunities and wasted a strong goaltending performance by Peter Naumienko. After only gaining a tie in their first two games the Lakers still had an opportunity to reach the "A" final. They had to win and score six goals and Otonobee had to lose and score less than three goals. The boys CARPENTRY SERVICES did their part defeating MacIntosh of Oshawa 6-0. Otonobee lost, but managed 3 goals in defeat to edge out the Lakers by one goal in the goals for column. In the **B"" final the Lakers faced MacIntosh once again. The Macln- tosh team started strong and forc- ed the play in the first period building a 3-1 lead. Scugog mounted a comeback with less than 10 minutes left in the game. They scored three consecutive goals cap- ping the comeback with 4:51 left in the game and held on to win 4-3. M.V.P.'s for the Laker's in this tournament were Bob Tarbotton & Denzil Irving.
