32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 10, 1987 ~ Cartwright struck with tragedy once again Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Once again Cartwright has been struck with tragedy. The communi- ty was shocked to learn of the tragic death of Brian Tysick in a jeep ac- cident on Friday evening. Sympathy is extended to his parents Marie and Ross Tysick, and his sister Sherry and her fiance Leon Slute. A memorial service was held on Sun- day evening at the Scugog Memorial Chapel, Port Perry with the funeral service and interment in Perth on Tuesday. Thoughts go to the Redman fami- ly of Scugog Island on the loss of their fine dairy barn in a spec- tacular fire on Wednesday evening. Fortunately no injuries were suf- fered nor any livestock lost in the fire. Blackstock and District Lions Club members would like to thank everyone who attended the Centen- nial Barbeque supper at the Recrea- tion Centre on Friday evening. They also thanked all who donated door prizes. Nine couples along with Rev. and Mrs. D. Davis as leaders enjoyed a Marriage Enrichment Weekend at Elim Lodge over the weekend. They spent a very rewarding and thought provoking time, District Governor Lion Al Nowit- ski attended the regular Lions meeting on Wednesday evening. Miss Susan Sheen of Toronto was a guest of Elaine and Neil Bailey and Tara on the weekend. She at- tended Commencement Exercises and enjoyed meeting many Cart- wright friends. Harold and Eileen McLaughlin, Roy and Edith McLaughlin enjoyed attending a surprise housewarming dinner for Roy and Harold's sister Jean and Ross Ashton in their new home in Bowmanville on Saturday evening. They were joined by another brother Ted and Mary McLaughlin of Fenelon Falls. Roy and Shirley Turner returned home on Friday from a fantastic month-long holiday to the Orient. They enjoyed visiting Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore Bali Indonesia and Hong Kong. Won't they have interesting stories to tell? As if this trip wasn't enough for a lifetime, just previous to the Orien- tal trip, Roy and Shirley along with Jean and Harold Kyte, Ken and Dol- ly Lee and Kenand Doris Dargavel had enjoyed a Mediterranean cruise with many interesting stops with camel riding and other tourist at- tractions. We will be waiting for travelogues from these travellers. On Friday evening the Durham Region Ploughman's Association held its annual banquet and awards night at the United Church CE. Room with the U.C.W. catering the dinner. On Sunday morning in Mr. Davis' absence the guest speaker was the Rev. Ruth McKinnell of Enniskillen who gave a thoughtful sermon. Meeting in the Middle Plans are underway for the Anniversary Ser- vice next Sunday morning at 10:00 p.m. with the United Church Moderator Dr. Anne Squire as guest speaker. Members are asked to ring items for the Memory Table- thing to bring back memories of the past one hundred years of the church and also sandwiches and cookies for a 'Stand Up" lunch for a time of fellowship with Dr. Squire and our other visitors. On Saturday November 14 a Christmas Craft Sale will be held at the United Church with all types of interesting gift ideas as well as a bake table. This event will be open from 10:00 - 4:00. Christmas is closer than we might like to think. The Directors of the Agricultural Society are planning a 'Perk up the IFairgrounds' Dance at the Rec Centre on Nov. 28 with music by Dennis Franssen. Tickets are available from Rolly Coy, Jean Mahaffy and Joyce Kelly. lodith McLaughlin and Dora Mar- tyn enjoyed attending the Women's Institute Convention in the Royal York on Tuesday and Wednesday last week. Many from this area attended the Port Perry High School Commence- ment on Friday evening. An excellent crowd attended the Cartwright High School Commence- ment Exercises on Saturday even- ing. Welcome and introductory remarks were given by Principal J.R. Musselman followed by the message from Students' Council President Claire MacKenzie who in- troduced her Council. Mr. Musselman in his closing remarks displayed a beautiful pain- ting of the school that will be plac- ed in the school in memory of two former students Bradley Guernsey and Eleanor Kelly. Following the singing of O'Canada the graduates, parents and friends enjoyed a reception at thé high school. 'The Annual Graduates' dinner was held at the St. John's Anglican Parish Hall. After the delicious din- ner the teachers each spoke about the graduates giving many in- teresting ancedotes about each stu- dent and wishing them well in the future. The students had an ex- cellent opportunity to compare notes on their experiences since leaving C.H.S. last June. A most pleasant event. The Floor Hockey results - In the Junior Division the Bombers "bombed" the Leafs 8-4. Bradley Morton had a great game scoring 5 with Tommy Waters scoring the other 3 for the winners with Jason Lyons 3, Adam Stewart 1. In the Senior Division Blackstock Bruins defeated the Cartwright Canadians 7-5. Scoring for the Bruins were Mike Hepburn 4, Jay Buma 2 and Daryl Dutkewich 1. The Canadians scorers were Mike Staniland 3, Mike Leach and Bren- don Agnew. Blackstock W.I. by Helen Bradburn P.R.O. On November 2 our meeting started with dessert and tea in the hall. Meeting opened by singing the Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Collect. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. We will serve Lions' dinners same as last year. A thank you was given to Dora Martyn and her committee for organizing so well the Heritage Day programme at Cartwright Cen- tral Public School. Mrs. Hoogeveen will be paid and thanked for keep- ing the War Memorial so beautiful all summer. A donation will be sent to Operation Scugog. Resolutions were read and voted on a guide for our voting delegates: Edith McLaughlin and Dora Martyn at Convention. Motto: Small is vital to our culture in Canada was replied to by Lisa Kristensen. 'Roll Call: If you would begin a small business now, what would you choose? The ladies then left to visit a cot- tage industry at Ed and Anne Emer- son's home. Anne told us of clay and glazing and firing etc. She formed a bowl, bottle, plate and put handle on a pitcher she had made the day before as the vessel had to be firm- ed. The ladies were all spellbound as she worked and talked and to top it all off we saw their new kitchen and the fireplace. Eight euchre tables Ashburn and Area News by Florence Ashton There were 8 tables of euchre played at the euchre party last Thursday evening. First prizes went to Laurena Bright and Harold Whit- bread. Low prizes to Leo Richard and Nora Bentley. Lone hands to Art Richardson. Don Wood won the door prize. 50/50 draw to Terry Parrott. The next euchre will be on November 19. The Eleanor Knight Group of the Women's Missionary Society met at the home of Muriel Fisher last Wednesday evening with 11 members present. We continued our study on the cults, with Florence Ashton speaking on the Mormons, whose headquarters is in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Ashburn Centennial Com- munity Centre Annual general meeting will be on Thursday, November 12 at 8:15 p.m. All welcome. Please attend. You are invited to attend the Parish Bazaar at St. Thomas' Church, Brooklin on Saturday, November 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Crafts, baking, plants, fish pond, books and luncheon.
