The rink skipped by Helen Parish (at left) won this spiel with 33 points over two games. With Helen are Mae Smitherman, Marion Wallace and and 4th. Ann Meester. Eve Johnston (centre) president of the Ladies Curling presented the trophy to Helen. Runner-up with 29 points was the Karen Parish rink, while Ruth Parrott and Joan Mcll- veen rinks from Oshawa Curling Club placed 3rd Goalies sharp as Atoms In a hard fought battle, Port Atom B's came out victorious against Omemee in their Saturday night league game. Ian Shrigley opened up the scor- ing 1n the 1st period with assists to Daryl Bourgeois and Greg Thomp- son. Richie Tripp scored his first goal of the year with assists going to Graham Holt and Greg Tweens 'good hosts' On Sunday November 22, Port Perry's Chris Allan Aluminum Tweens Ringette team played host to a team from Woodville. Port turn- ed out to be too good a host by los- ing to ihe tune of 8-3. It was Port Perrys first loss of the season. Nicki Beare opened the scoring on a neat three way passing play from Danielle Cooper and Kelly Menzies. Two minutes later Woodville tied it up but less than a minute after the Woodville goal, Nicki Beare took a pass from Lori Buscher and again Port took the lead. For the next five Port Perry 1.G.A. Belles travell- ed to Beaverton last week to play an exhibition game against their team. Port started out quickly as they went ahead by 6 goals in the first,10 minutes of the game. By the end of the first half Port was in control of the game by a score of 8 - 2 Port then seemed to relax a little on their lead and discovered that Beaverton has a team that won't give up. Beaverton outscored Port in the second half by 7 - 5 and were coming on strong right to the final buzzer. Scoring for Port were Denise Tomkins 2 assists, Dana Forder 2 assists, Jen Pelow 1 goal, 2 assists Michelle Ryan 1 goal, Colleen Yorke 3 goals, Sherry Harris 6 goals, 1 assist and the hardest worker on the ice that night Vicki Reid with 5 assists and a couple of good scoring chances through her tenacious Thompson. Omemee came back with two goals to tie up the game. Omemee had a 3 man break early in the 2nd period which was broken up by Matt Morris. Craig Laird returned with . his 2nd breakaway only to just miss the net. Omemee scored going ahead 3-2. This was followed by a goal by minutes the two teams were even with Bristol Sleep making two ex- cellent saves for Port Perry. With 7 minutes to go in the opening period, Woodville tied it up and less than a minute later got the go ahead goal and never looked back. Chris Mueller from Valerie Payne made it 5-3 and that ended Port's scoring. This was the first really stiff com- petition Port Perry has come up against and the girls didn't seem to be prepared for the hard skating, tough Woodville team. We'll get them next time girls. Belles hang on, just checking. Port then hosted a team from Etobicoke on Sunday and discovered again the difference bhet- ween "A'" and ""B" competition. Etobicoke play a fast skating and passing game. Our girls gave it their all for the entire game but found it difficult to control the game at anytime. Again T.C. in the net had a lot of work and at times made stops that Etobicoke players thought were goals Port went down to defeat by a score of 13 - 0, but became aware of the calibre of Ringette being played at the "A" level The next game for our girls is Sun day, November 29 at 1:30 P.M. at our local arena. Come out and sup- port our local Ringette teams and enjoy determination and skills of these young ladies as they strive for excellence nip Omemee squad 4-3 Daryl Bourgeois, assists to lan Shrigley and Greg Thompson. Ricky Olaisen's backchecking earned him a breakaway only to be dumped just as he was ready to score. Craig Laird made the game 4-3 ip the 3rd period when his persistent checking got him another breakaway. Assists went to Kent Taylor and again, for his fourth assist, Greg Thompson. Obviously Gi eg was flying tonight! Omemee came back again to tie things up. To end an exciting game Kent Taylor put it away to give Port the win, with the assist going to Craig Laird. Both Scott Prechitko and James Patterson deserved a standing ovation for their awesome saves in net. Thanks for keeping us in the game guys! Excellent backchecking by Jeff Vernon and Ricky Olaisen in this game. On Sunday November 22, the Pineridge Sports Atom No. 2 team travelled to Oshawa to play an ear- ly morning exhibition game against the L.N.H.L. Black Hawks. This was a very close game as there was no scoring until the third period. In the first two periods there was lots of end to end action but the good defense and goaltending from both teams kept the game 0-0. Port Perry had a couple of good chances when they had a man advantage but just didn't connect. On a line change for Port Perry, Jeff Vernon was in the right place at the right time as he stopped a 2-1 breakaway. Oshawa finally broke the 0-0 tie on a short handed goal but Port Perry came back two minutes later on a beautiful pass from Graham Holt to Richie Tripp. Now that Richie has started there's no stopping him now! I'he game ended a 1-1 tie One of the main reasons the score was so low was the excellent plays of Daryl Bourgeois who many times stole the puck from the opposition Well done Daryl! The Port Perry Atom No. 2 team plays Tuesday night in Brooklin and Friday night at 8:00 in Port Perry against Newcastle. Be there and see a very hard working team in action PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 24, 1987 -- 25 Curling Corner by Scott Howey This coming Saturday November 28, is the Grey Cup Bonspiel at the Port Perry Curling Club.
