" Durham councillors last week ap- proved the request for extra staff with the addition of two new plan- ners, one new planning technician and the up-grading of a senior plan- ner to level two from level one. It is expected that the new staff will cost the Region about $100,000 in salaries and benefits, but that figure will be off set by about $50,000 in additional revenues generated by development activity. Durham's Commissioner of Plan- ning, Dr. Mofeed Michael told the 'Regional council meeting last week that his request for additional staff is 'not empire building." "The crisis (in the department) is here. The amount of development (in Durham) has created a lot of strain on staff in my department," he stated. And he noted that a decade ago the planning department had 58 peo- ple on staff, while this year that number is 38. It is not expected that the new staff authorized by council last week's meeting will join the plann- ing department before the end of the year. = Chemical gremlins Those darn gremlins! If you've been wondering why a few photos in this week's Star are a little on the spotted side, don't worry, you're not imagining it. Those darn gremlins that plague the Star from time to time got into the chemicals in the darkroom and placed permanent dots on some of the negatives. Unfortunately, they've ruined the photos, but there's nothing we can do about it, except prevent if from happening next week. Sorry about that! p.o. box 420 68 scugog street, port perry, ont.
