McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks remain firmly in second place in the North Division of the Central Junior C Hockey League as they earned three points in two games last week. Last Thursday, the MoJacks got a solid team performance and fine goaltending from Brian Tarleton as they handed the Ajax Axemen a stunning 7-0 defeat in Ajax. On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks were fortunate in skating to a 4-4 draw against the Though he played just part of two games for ~ the MoJacks, Steve Fountain (18 in white) has been a presence in both. Sunday night against the Uxbridge Bruins, Fountain had a beautiful goal called back when the referees ruled there was interference on the goalie and he later got into a punch-up with the Bruins Mike Richard- son. However, the burley MoJack got tagged hard working Uxbridge Bruins who enjoyed the better of the play for two full periods, The Bruins were on the board first at 3:56 of the opening period when Ken Burrows flipped a back-hand past Paul Goreski while the Mo- Jacks enjoyed a man advantage. Three minutes later with the teams four-aside defenseman Clay Dempsey evened the score at 1-1 when he parked himself right on Bruin netminder Ian Witucki's door step and rapped in a centering pass ~ from Dave Burnett. Two minutes later, the MoJacks grabbed a 2-1 lead as Rob Baker scooted around the net and tucked the puck in the open corner. But the Bruins began to take the play to the MoJacks and with less than two minutes in the period Todd Laroche made it 2-2. The MoJacks were lucky to get out of the period with the score tied. Were it not for some good work in the nets by Goreski, the margin could easily have been three or four goals in the i i with an aggressor penalty in that fight and he'll be on the shelf for two games sitting out a suspension. The former Oshawa Legionaire likes to play it rough -and tumble. The MoJacks and the Bruins skated to a 4-4 draw in Sunday's game and the MoJacks were fortunate to come away with a single point. (See story). PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 8, 1987 -- 25 Bruins favour. In the second period, the Bruins picked up where they left off, skating hard and out-working the MoJacks along the boards and in the corners. The MoJacks took a string of minor penalties and they caught up to the team as Uxbridge went ahead 3-2 when Brent Brown found the range. Todd Laroche upped the margin to 4-2 two minutes later on a disputed goal. The team also had a bit of poor luck when forward Dean Smethurst made a nice rush across the Bruin line and drilled a hard slap shot that beat Witucki. But the puck hit the right part squarely and bounced out of harm's way to the corner. The MoJacks have enjoyed strong final periods in many games this season and they came to life against the Bruins with Steve Ashby direc- ting a pass home from Kevin Long at 8:43. Just prior to that the MoJacks had a goal called back when Steve Foun- tain ripped a shot from 30 feet out. But referee John Cane ruled that Clay Dempsey was interfering with the Bruin netminder. The goal was dis-allowed and Dempsey was call- ed for a minor penalty. But the MoJacks continued to press in the second half of the period and at 16:40 they tied the score at 4-4 with a power play effort. It was a pretty three way passing play from Craig Menzies and Steve Ashby with Kevin Long putting some fancy moves on a Bruin defender right in front of the net then calmy firing the puck into the lower left corner from 15 feet out. This was a chippy game with the Bruins taking 38 minutes in minors along with a five minute fighting major to Mike Richardson who tangled with burly MoJack defenseman Steve Fountain. The MoJacks took 40 minutes in minor penalties, and the fighting major to Fountain. In just his se- cond game with Port Perry, FFoun- tain made his presence felt in the third period when he crunched a Bruin player into the boards and then took a cross-check from Richardson. The two of them squared off at centre ice and did some heavy punching before the linesmen got between them. Richardson was hit for an in- stigator penalty and Fountain with the aggressor penalty, and that will cost him a couple of games in suspensions. This seems to be a trend in the Central Junior League this season with the referees calling aggressor and instigator penalties when players drop the gloves. For Foun- tain, it was his second aggressor penalty in as many games. Last Thursday evening in Ajax, the MoJacks turned in one of their strongest efforts to date in blanking the Axemen 7-0. Dean Smethurst clicked for a pair of goals while singles came from Chris Kdmond- son, Kevin Long, Craig Menzies, Bob St. Jules and John Hartford. Kevin Long also picked up four assists in this one. Brian Tarleton turned aside 30 shots to earn a well deserved shut-out. The MoJacks will be without all- star defenseman Darren Nesbitt for the next few games as he's on the shelf with a broken bone in his right hand He could be back in the line- up on December 20, just in time for a crucial match in Port Perry against league-leading Lakefield. Meanwhile the MoJacks have some important divisional games up-coming in the next couple of weeks. This Friday they're in Lind- say, and on Sunday, the Muskies pay a return visit to the Scugog Arena. On December 18, they visit Uxbridge and on the 20th meet Lakefield at home. They travel to Madoc on the 22, host Cobourg on the 27th and Bowmanville on Dec. 30. After 15 games so far this season, the MoJacks are a very respectable 10-3-2, good enough for 22 points. They have scored 115 goals, while giving up just 42. In their last six games, they have had two shut-outs and given up just 14 goals. In other Junior C action over the weekend, Wellington defeated Ux- bridge 7-3, Bowmanville dumped Lindsay 8-3, Little Britain handed Lakefield its second loss of the year, 5-3, and Lakefield defeated Lindsay. Lindsay ousts Legionaires from tournament The Pee Wee Legionaires had a full week of hockey. We started out with an exhibition game in Nobleton last Wednesday night. The boys were sharp and much too strong for the local team. The game ended because of curfew and our team had scored 5 goals to their 1. Scoring for our team was Jason Cochrane with an unassisted goal. Duane Empringham also scored unassisted. Jeff Andrews got Port's next goal, with the assist to Nathan Brown. Brad Moase got the goalie going down to score our third goal, with assists to Duane Empringham and Nathan Brown. Duane Empr- ingham finished our scoring on a hard fought effort, with Brad Moase picking up the assist. On Friday night the boys played an exhibition game against the Oshawa Bruins that appeared by the second period to be more of a fighting match than a hockey game. But the boys settled down part way through the second period and started to play hockey, we ended in a 6-2 win. Gavin Cochrane scored our first goal with a hard point shot, and assisting on the goal was Brad Moase and Dave Pashley. In the second period Jeff Parry scored for Port with the assists from Peter King and Jason Cochrane. Then Chris MacLeod had a great breakaway and beat the goalie to again score for Port. Jason Cochrane was all alone when he rushed the goalie who had come out almost to the blue line to stop the puck. The goalie was unable to hold onto the puck and Jason made a beautiful play around him. Steve Laird scored Port's fifth goal with the assist to Jeff Parry. Jason Cochrane was able to score our final goal on a backhand shot, after receiving the pass from Steve Laird and Darryl Vanderslag. On Saturday the team travelled to the Cobourg Tournament and met up with Napanee in their first round of play. The game was close, but the Legionaires were able to come up with a 3-2 win. Duane Empringham scored our first goal on a high corner shot, which seemed to catch the goalie napping. Brad Moase and Simon Traynor picked up the assists. Jason Cochrane scored our next goal with a corner pass from Steve Laird, Jeff Parry also assisted on the goal In the second period Jason Cochrane again scored for Port with Steve Laird and Jeff Parry assisting. Luckily Port was able to score these three goals before Napanee got many shots on us. In the final period Napanee out shot us 15 to 6 and two times they scored on us. The boys advanced onto a game against the Lindsay team and were not as successful as we've always heen against this club. Our team lost H-2. Lindsay played a fine game and we played tough, but were not able to hold them down. Peter King scored our first goal on an unassisted effort, and Jason Cochrane scored our final goal on an unassisted goal. Rick Hutchinson and Shawn Larocque shared the goaltending throughout the tournament and had their work cut out for them Team Frank Real Estate Emmerson Ins. Brokerage 1.G.A.
