JA -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 22, 1987 i ! A Perfect timing for Christmas Cindy Mitchell of R.R. 1, Blackstock was the lucky winner of $500 in a 50-50 draw organized by Pierre Leduc. She was presented with a che- que last week and said it will be put to good use over Christmas. The other half of the 50-50 draw (From page 1) apartment and condo units. He agreed with councillor Harvey Graham who expressed concern about the impact on existing facilities if 190 units are built, especially if they are occupied by retirement age people who will be elderly in ten to 15 years time. He said there could be a serious future impact on such things as out patient services provided by the local hospital. "Some specific items that came under discussion at Monday's meeting included the developer's wish to secure ownership from the Township of a triangular piece of land immediately south of the baseball diamond The developer wants to purchase this land and to cover over a large dramnage ditch which cuts through the parcel at present Mr McDermott sand the purchase of the land and the road allowance from Water Street should be con sidered by the council And he said he "has no problems" with the stated intention of the developer to build a private board walk (closed to the general public) along the lakefront portion of this property Mr. McDermott said that pedestrians approaching the mall from the downtown area should use Water Street and hopefully new sidewalks will be constructed along that street While members of council have taken a postive approach to this massive development proposal which could cost as much as $20 milhon to construct, there are a lot of concerns that will have to be iron ed out before approvals are given. Councillor Don Cochrane, for ex ample, told the meeting he feels that 90 condos in four buildings is too much, and said he would hike to see the number reduced by 20 Councillor Yvonne Christie ex pressed strong concern about the entrance into the proposed mall from Highway 7A and said traffic hghts there are "an absolute necessity before she gives her ap proval to the development And councillor Lawrence Malcolm noted that the %0 condos and 100 apartment units would va tually use up all the current capaci ty of the Port Perry sewage lagoon treatment facility, Mr. McDermott told the council he is not qualified to accurately assess what kind of economic im- pact the addition of 50,000 square feet of retail store space would have on the present commercial sector in Port Perry. A study commissioned by the developers suggested that the com- munity is growing enough to sustain this added growth in the retail sector. Mr. McDermott suggested that if council has strong concerns about was split between the Community Hospital and Community Care. Accepting cheques are John Den Boer (far left) from Community Care and hospital administrator David Brown. Conway project discussed any negative economic impact, the municipality should retain a specialist in these matters. However, Mr. McDermott said that from a land planning point of view, locating a new mall in that area is much preferable to one on the outskirts of Port Perry. "If the Township is going to add another 50,000 square feet of store space, that is the best place for it." he said. \ A Memorial is a family tribute, a permanent reminder of love and family bonds.
