Fantastic for skaters 1 Lake turne PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, December 30, 1987 -- 13 d into open-air arena Never in recent memory has the ice on Lake Scugog been so perfect for skating. Due to fluke weather conditions, the last three or four days have pro- vided ideal ice for skaters and hockey players. Until Christmas, mild temperatures kept several inches of water on top of the somewhat thin ice of Lake Scugog. Then Boxing Day rolled around with cold weather, freezing that water into a natural arena-miles wide. Hundreds of families took advan- tage of the ice by strapping on their blades over the Christmas weekend, and on through to Tuesday. In fact, as long as it doesn't snow and temperatures continue to plum- met, folks will enjoy the biggest natural arena Scugog Township has ever seen. Just one warning-stick close to the shoreline, stay away from the mid- dle, where deeper, faster-running water can cause unsafe ice conditions. First, mild weather conditions melted the top layer of ice, then a cold snap on Boxing Day froze Lake Scugog solid, creating a wonderful natural skating rink. Hundreds of people took ad- vantage of the smooth skating surface over three or four days, including these two youngsters and their Dad. This little tyke is too tiny for skates, but Dad had the youngster out on the ice anyways ---- on wheels instead of blades. Upsy, daisy! This young goaltender, playing between the pipes (er, running shoes) on Lake Scugog Monday afternoon, did the belly flop while saving a goal. Above, big sister comes to the rescue. 68 Water St., Port Perry 985-9888 Now Available on VHS NEW YEAR'S HOURS: December 31 -- 11 AM to 9 PM January 1 -- Noon to 8 PM REGULAR HOURS: Sunday to Friday - Noon to 8 PM Saturday - 10 AM to 9 PM ater SHOPLIFTING IS A CRIME ~ A couple of youngsters take advantage of last weekend's ideal ice conditions on Lake Scugog to play some shimmy.
