MoJacks pin a 9-2 loss on Eagles, then nip Uxbridge by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks greeted the New Year with a pair of vic- tories over two of their toughest rivals in the Central Junior C Hockey League. On December 30, the team gave coaches George Burnett and Garnet Warriner some New Year's cheer with 60 minutes of fine hockey to pound league-leading Bowmanville by a score of 9-2. Then on January 3, the MoJacks got into a wild game with the Ux- bridge Bruins at the Scugog Arena to avercome a three goal deficit en route to a 9-7 victory. It was the first victory over the Bruins in three outings so far this season. After taking a 1-0 lead early in the first on a deflected goal by Greg Warriner, the MoJacks seemed to fall asleep for ten minutes as the Bruins tallied four straight and ap- peared to be on their way to an easy two points. - But the MoJacks fought back late in the first with a pair of goals from Dave Burnett. Early in the second, forward Kevin Long tied the game at 4-4 when he tipped in a shot from Chris Edmondson at the point. But two minutes later the Bruins went ahead 5-4 when Kevin Smith fooled Brian Tarleton with a long slap shot through the pads. Then it was the turn of the Mo- Jacks to surge ahead with four straight goals and what appeared to be a comfortable 8-5 bulge by the mid-point in the third period. Ed- mondson, Dave Culbert, Kevin Long, with his second of the game, and Steve Ashby clicked for the goals. The Bruins then staged a come- back of their own starting at 14:48 when captain Todd Laroche slipped one past Tarleton from the side of the crease. Two minutes later, John Steves cut the MoJack margin to a single goal. The Bruins yanked netminder Ian Witucki in the final minute for an ex- tra attacker and were buzzing around the MoJacks net when Kevin Long tipped a loose puck into the centre ice area and raced the length of the ice to deposit it easily in the open net to give the MoJacks a 9-7 win. For Long, it was the second straight hat trick in as many games. He has been playing outstanding hockey for the team in the last few weeks. This was a typical Port Perry- Uxbridge game with a steady The Port Perry Menzies Midgets have advanced to the final round of the Silver Stick competition after they dominated a recent tourna- ment held in Wasaga Beach. The Port Midgets won all four games by rather wide margins in- cluding the final over Elmvale by the score of 9-2. This qualifies the team coached by Doug Scott for another round of Silver Stick play January 22-24 in Fort Huron, Michigan. It was a very busy week for the Port Perry team who split the time between the Wasaga Beach tourna- ment and a much tougher AA WEDDING INVITATIONS and Accessories PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street Port Perry 985-7383 parade of minor penalties for chip- py infractions and there were a few minor skirmishes along the way. Referee Frank Robinson was not putting up with any nonsense and in the second period he took exception to some verbal comments from Mo- Jack coach George Burnett and tossed him from the game. It was a rare experience for Burnett who usually keeps his cool behind the bench. But he will have to watch the next two games from the stands. Late in the game, the MoJacks got a scare when defenseman Clay Dempsey took a hard shot in the face. The puck seemed to strike him ~ just under the face-guard and for a few moments the injury appeared serious. But Dempsey shook it off and returned to action later in the game. The MoJacks now have 33 points on 15 wins and three ties, good enough for a solid grip on second place in the north division of the Central Loop. They still have an out- side shot at catching division leading Lakefield Chiefs, but it's a long one. Last Wednesday night (Dec. 30) the MoJacks played what most observers said was their finest game of hockey this season as they humbled the Bowmanville Eagles 9-2 in front of a large crowd at the Scugog Arena. Aside from a few brief moments in the middle period, the MoJacks dominated the Eagles throughout this game with strong skating and passing and solid defensive work in front of Brian Tarleton who was sharp when necessary in the Port Perry cage. It was only the second loss for the Eagles this season and one of the most lop-sided losses the Bowman- ville Club has suffered in several Junior C seasons. The MoJacks came out of the chute in a hurry and the game was less than five minutes old when Kevin Long clicked on the power play deflecting a low shot from the point by Chris Edmondson. Two minutes later, Long went to work again when he teamed with Bob St. Jules to work the puck in front of the Eagle cage for a shot from in close. At the 10:07 mark, Darren Nesbitt un-leashed a beautiful slap shot from the left point that whistled past Dave Smith and caught the lower corner of the Eagle net. And the Mo- Jacks made it 4-0 two minutes later while enjoying a two man advan- Midgets hot tourney in Markham. On a nice passing play, Steve Ashby was set up in front by Steve Fountain and Edmondson. The MoJacks out-shot the visitors 16-8 in the first period and were full marks for the 4-0 lead. The pace of the game slowed slightly in the middle frame, but the MoJacks did sme fine work at the mid-point killing a long two man penalty and Tarleton had to make his toughest stops of the contest. With 14 seconds left in the period, the Eagles scored off a scramble as Steve Flintoff shovelled the puck in- to the cage. The MoJacks argued that a Bowmanville player was in the crease at the time, but the goal was allowed. The MoJacks were not to let the Eagles up off the canvas in the third period as they made it 5-1 at the 54 second mark. Rob Baker took the puck the length of the ice on a fine individual rush with John Harman popping home the rebound. Three minutes later, the Eagles looked like they might be ready to stage one of their patented come- backs as team captain Brian Heard took a long pass on the left wing and walked in alone to beat Tarleton on the back-hand. The Eagles were killing a penalty at the time. Dave Burnett took advantage of a Bowmanville penalty at 11:34 to make it 6-2 and a couple of minutes later Kevin Long got his well deserved hat trick when he collected a loose puck at the Eagle line and fired a perfect shot to the corner of the net. That made it 7-2 and the MoJacks added a couple more in the late stages to put the icing on the game as Clay Dempsey and Dean Smethurst scored from in close. The MoJacks out-shot Bowman- ville 41-34 in this game. Without tak- ing anything away from the solid performance of the Port Perry team, the Eagles appeared sluggish from the fact they had not played a game in nine days. The MoJacks will face a tougher team when they travel to Bowmanville on January 12 for the only other regular season meeting. The return of defensemen Rob Metcalfe and Chris Edmondson to the line-up was a decided factor in this game. Both played very well and took some of the pressure off Darren Nesbitt, Steve Fountain and Clay Dempsey who logged a lot of ice time in their absence. The game was chippy in spots with a couple of fairly minor skir- mishes, but for the most part the MoJacks showed a lot of poise in refusing to let themselves be goad- ed into retaliation penalties. The MoJacks took a dozen minors and fighting majors to Dempsey and Fountain, while the Eagles were called for 19 minors and fighting majors to Paul Stainton and captain Brian Heard who also got tagged with an instigator penalty which will cost him a game or two. Next action for the MoJacks is this Saturday night when they visit the Merchants in Little Britain, and they host the Madoc Hurricanes this coming Sunday at the Scugog Arena with game time at 7:30 PM.
