20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 5, 1988 Malmont Atoms reach the B finals The Port Atom A's qualified for the B Championship at the Bowmanville 'Toros Christmas Classic on the strength of 2 wins and a loss in round-robin play. In game 1 on Monday morning, Jay Tredway scored 2 of Port's first goals to lead Malmont Farms to a -1 win over Oshawa Black Hawks. Dave Bourgeois and Chad Kearns each had a goal and an assist, with Kenton LeFort rounding out the scoring while Brent Harper, Jeremy Geer, Mike Labanovich, Andrew Jones and Joe Broadworth each ad- ding an assist. . Brent and Mike, along with Neil Mueller each played a strong two- way game to lead a fine overall team effort. in game 2 Monday afternoon, a slick Whitby team handed Port a 4-2 loss. Failure to kill penalties prov- ed costly in this game as Whitby scored 2 power-play goals, building up a 3-0 lead. Chad got one back from Joe and Dave, but Whitby Mens hockey league action The first game of the day saw Larocque Electric upset first place team Compton Cable T.V. 5-1. Capitalizing for Larocque were Don Orr 1 goal, 2 assists, Dave Dickson 1 goal, 1 assist, Carl Fit- zgerald, Steve Gardner, and Bruce Smith 1 goal each. Adding assists were Doug Bache with 2, and Ed Olsen with one. Petites Bruton's 1.D.A. Petites hosted two games in the Port Perry Arena this past weekend. The first game took place Saturday January 2nd against Pickering. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. Tanya Towns was the sole scorer for Port with an unassisted goal. The game was a little slower paced than normal but some good goaltending by Tracy Pelow. The second game took place Sun- day afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against Oshawa. Port controlled the play from the opening free pass that The lone marker for Compton was John Robertson from Larry Page and Wayne Fox. Game two saw second place teams Norton's Home Im- provements and Crandell's River- boat stay in that position as they tied 3-3. Scoring for Norton's was Bill Van- Camp 1 goal, 1 assist, Dave Mann, tie 1-1 resulted in a 11-5 victory. The girls had regained their momentum after being off for the Christmas break. The girls demonstrated their skills at setting up plays, passing and fast skating. No luck for Belles The Port Perry I1.G.A. Belles travelled to Markham over the New Years weekend to play in their an- nual tournament. In this tourna- ment were teams from Scar- borough, London and Markham. In our first game against Scar- borough we were defeated by a score of 9-2. Passes were miss- ed and our skating seemed a bit sluggish as London handed us our second defeat by a score of 8 to 3. In our third game we met the host team from Markham who by defeating us would make the cham- pionship game. As in our previous games our passing left a lot to be desired as we again allowed the op- position a lot of chances on goal. Markham downed us by a score of 10-1. Scoring for Port over the weekend were Michelle Ryan 3 goals; Sherry Harris 3 goals with assists going to Vicki Reid, Val White, Lisa Francis, Tina Soomre and Jen Pelow with 2. Fighting for Sportsland were Ken - Smart 2 goals, Brian Samis and Ken Little 1 apiece. Assists to Brian Callery, "Doc" Thomson, Dale Bronson, Scott Davis, and Mark Jobb. Game four saw J & D Carpentry just squeeze past Dennis Anderson's with :21 seconds left in the game to make the final 4-3. Scoring for J & D were Bob Tar- botton 1 goal, 1 assist, Pete VanWeston 1 goal, 1 assist, Bill Owen and Colin Asselstine.1 goal each. Assisting were Doug Bronson 2, George Gladish, Terry Bacall, and Randy Prosser. Scorers for Andersons were Dave Bourgeois 1 goal, 1 assist, Dave Har- rison and Greg Mills got the others. Adding assists were Larry Courtice, Bruce Gracie, and Jirh Duncan each with one. scored again before Joe closed the scoring assisted by Kenton and Jay Tredway. On Tuesday, game 3 resulted in a tough comeback 2-1 win over Peter- boro. Again, a power-play goal gave the Petes a first period lead, but Kenton scored unassisted in the first minute of the second. Less than 5 minutes later Brent slipped a pass out of a pile-up to the point where Scott Heasman moved in and fired the game winner to send the Green Machine to the B final. That final was played Wednesday morning against North West Sports of the MTHL. Then, early in the third, Brett Lawson and Kenton set up Neil for a lovely 10 foot winner. Late in the game Dave provided insurance as he broke down the wing with the largest player in the tournament leaning all over him to cut in and fire the final goal to com- plete a 4-2 victory.
