Nursing home news Volunteers made Christmas all the merrier by Wendy Clarke Well all the hustle and bustle of Christmas is over and I'm sure that everyone had a real good Christmas and a very happy New Year. On December 20th we had a nice Sunday Church Service which was provided by the Gospel Hall from Uxbridge. . Monday December 21st was a very busy day with the Residents Annual Christmas Party. I'm glad to report that we had a great turn out this year. For our first time ever we had 3 different parties. We had our original party in the diningroom but also had parties on 2nd & 3rd floor which catered to those residents that were unable to withs- tand a full large party. Everyone sipped away on Egg Nog while listening to entertainment provided by Mr. Clem Jeffrey, Mr. Archie Walker and Mrs. Louise Hartney. We all then enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the kitchen girls. After- wards a band played delightful music which some people enjoyed dancing to. The group members were Don Fletcher, Chuck Kilpatrick and Jean Lapine from the Bowmanville area. Of course Santa Claus made his rounds to all residents and presented each one with a Christmas gift. In the afternoon on Tuesday (22) was a Residents Council Meeting. Items on the agenda were plans for an over-nite trip in 1988, buy an awn- ing for the patio, more bowling days wanted, and everyone agreed that they thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas Party and wouldn't change a thing. In the evening the Port Perry Presbyterian Church provided a church service. On the 23rd of December we had Sippin' & Singing. Everyone sang carols at the top of their voices and then relaxed and enjoyed some hot chocolate and donuts. The day before Christmas we gathered around the television to watch the movie "One Magic Christmas." I highly recommend this movie -- "It was great." Well Christmas Day arrived and I was one of the lucky ones that had to work but I must say that we had a very enjoyable day. I was work- ing with a great bunch of girls and 4 fe pets. Each one of us felt so good inside as we watched those residents that were able to go home with family for Christmas. There was a good 30-plus residents that were able to go out for the day. For those that remained at the Nursing Home there was some *'sip- pin & singing" in the diningroom and also Santa stopped in for a visit and delivered some gifts. A very special thank you to those wonder- ful volunteers that took time on Christmas Day to make the residents day a lot happier. They are D. Petrie, K. Petrie, Audrey, Patty Horn, McKenzie Baker and Jean. On Monday December 28th was bowling. Congratulations to our top scorer Becky Gray with 90 points. December 29th we had a Xmax "Show 'n' Tell." A few residents gathered in the Activity Room-*to show off what they received for Christmas. A discussion was also held with each one telling us how their Christmas went. After dinner a Church service was provided by the Port Perry Pentecostal Church. Wednesday was a quiet day. In the afternoon there was a Bingo for all those interested. Well the last day of the year had finally arrived. Thursday afternoon we had a New Years discussion. A lot of the residents stated their "New Years Resolution' for 1988. After supper we all took part in a New. Year's Eve Pyjama Party. Special Thank You to our fantastic D.J. "Barb" for providing us with some great dancing music. Everyone certainly enjoyed the wine along with cheese 'n' crackers. Several residents received prizes for dancing or for the best nightwear. As the New Year rolled in we had our count-down and toasted to 1988. Birthday wishes are extended to Mr. Harry Sanderson (Jan. 12). Upcoming events in January are Tropical Day (12), Supper Club (14), Resident's Council (18), and the Monthly Birthday Party (18). PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 5, 1988 -- 21 Unfortunately over the festive season we were saddened by the deaths of 3 of our friends. Miss Judith Baynes passed away quietly on Friday December 18th. Judy had been ill and confined to a bed for quite some time. We will always remember Judy for her many kisses that she loved to give to the nurses. Mrs. Jessie Goode passed away on Monday December 21st. Jessie was well known in the community and a lot of us can remember back to the days when she and her fami- ly operated the old Pure Spring Pop Factory here in Port Perry. Mr. Arthur Hyland passed away quite unexpectedly on Sunday December 27th while a patient at the Port Perry Hospital. Arthur was always so busy selling us lucky Win- tario tickets or what ever tickets were on the market. Art was very special to a lot of the staff and will certainly be missed by all. Now that the Christmas season is over we would like to say an over- all special thank you to the volunteers, groups, organizations, individuals, etc. for the visits, the goodies, the entertainment and the greetings. It is these people that help make the Christmas Season a lot brighter for each resident. If . anyone mentioned above is in- terested in providing entertainment . or other services during the rest of the year then please let us know. Contact the Activity Department (985-3205). The residents and staff would like to extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Ivy Gould who has taken up residence with us. Ivy has come from the Port Perry Hospital and has family living here in Port Perry. Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader While we are enjoying tne beautiful travelling weather and holiday time as well as wishing all a Happy New Year, little do we realize the pain and heartache of others who suffer illness or the loss of loved ones. Little did we think last week when we learned that Mrs. Gayle McQuinn had gone to hospital that this week we would send sympathy to her husband Jim and her family. Though a big healthy looking girl, we realized and were sorry for her various health and physical problems. I knew Gayle Marks intimately during 4 years of her early girlhood and considered my relationship with her one of the pleasures of my life. Mrs. Marion Hughes from Port View Beach entered the Port Perry Hospital last week and at present seems to be feeling much better. Among the weekend holiday visitors were Mrs. Elsie Angus and son John from Kinmount with brother Nelson and Betty Reader and other relatives. Mrs. Cora Thompson from Barrie with sister Reta Reader and family. May I share some of my Christmas mail with you? The let- ter from Rev. Brian and Carol Robinson of St. Jacobs was like a visit with revelation of their work and family development. It is in- teresting to hear of United Church, Lutherans and Mennonites working together harmoniously on so many projects. . It was nice to again get a well written letter from the 91 year old Ida Britton who was the oldest former student at the Port Perry High School Re-union. In spite of the occasional physical illness, her in- terests are still very keen. In some cases, it is sad to note that the Annual letter from the Gibbons sisters formerly of Port View Beach get smaller. Then some do not come any more.
