Talk about a great tournament, and a close final game! The Bruton's IDA Petites hosted a last Saturday at Scugog Memorial Arena, and although they didn't win the trophy, they lost the final game by just one Ringette tourney This past Saturday, Jan. 9, Bruton's I.D.A. Petites hosted . a Ringette Tournament at the Port Perry Arena. Teams from Barrie, Mississauga, Oshawa and Port Perry participated in the one day event. Each team was guaranteed two games with the winners of the second game playing a third to decide the champions of the tournament. Ports first game was against Oshawa. Our petites controlled the game from the opening free pass and registered a 7-1 victory. Bruton's I.D.A. petites second en- counter was with the team from "Barrie. The Barrie team had come to play ringette and was demonstrated in the end to end ac- tion. The game remained close up until the final few minutes when Port exploded with two quick goals that increased their lead by three goals. The girls really came together as a team to end the game with a 5-2 win. Mississauga got on the scoreboard first and by mid point of the first period had a two goal lead. At this point coach L. Morden juggled the lines around. By the end of the first period the teams were one goal apart with Mississauga leading 2-1. The second period was wide open with end to end action. Both teams displayed their'skills at passing, set- ting up plays and skating. The goaltenders made some key stops during this period. The third period ended in a 4-4 tie. The game went into sudden death overtime with Mississauga scoring a short handed goal at 2:49 to win the game and the tournament. Tracy Pelow,. our goaltender, played a great game with some fine The novice boys travelled to Bracebridge & Gravenhurst for a tournament on the weekend only to come home with two hard fought games and no wins. Although they played terrific hockey they could not get the edge they needed to win their 1st game. It was extremely close with good performances by Kevin Gray on defense and Jeff Clarke on forward. Their second game saw them matched up against Gravenhurst and again they dug hard and we saw great performances by Kent Johnston, Brad Shanley & Darryl Moase. The game seemed fairly evenly matched as both sides had plenty of scoring opportunity. However, Gravenhurst had a penalty shot on our net, halfway through the second period, giving them the lead in which we were unable to catch up to. Tommy Chambers and Tim Fitz- patrick continue to give strong per- formances and defensemen Mike Heasman, Brad Morton and Jason Logan have proven to be invaluable. Scoring in this game was Matthew McClelland, Daryl McEnaney and PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 12, 1988 -- 21 Pineridge Atoms struggle a bit The Pineridge Sports Atom No. 2 team seem to be struggling in the early part of '88. On Jan. 4 Port lost to Bowmanville. ' Port Perry got on the board first on a good goal by Daryl Bourgeois assisted by Matt Morris and lan Shrigley. Bowmanville came back with 6, unanswered goals and won the game 6-1. ' On Jan. 7 Port travelled to Bewdley hoping to win but came ° home disappointed. Bewdley scored in the first period and carried that lead until Port tied it up on an unassisted goal by Jeff Vernon. Bewdley scored 2 more goals and the game ended up 3-1 against us. On the weekend the boys travell- ed to Halibyrton and once again were denied victory. Port played their first game against the team from Bowmanville and lost 3-1. This was the same team we had played earlier this week so Port was ready for action. A great individual effort by Craig Laird who slipped the puck to Kent Taylor who one-timed it into the net with a hard shot. Port didn't fair well in the win col- umn in the tournament but their team play was very strong and the outcome could have been switched very easily. The Pineridge Sports Atom No. 2 team are now off to a tournament in Bewdley on the weekend.
