Ringette Week Feb. 7-14 This year February 7 - 14 has been designated as Ringette Week, a time when all associa- tions try to promote the sport of Ringette. Ringette is a team sport, played on the ice, by girls of all ages. It is popular both in Canada and the U.S. and also in other countries throughout the world. Ringette is fun, good exercise and is a time when girls can make lasting friendships as they practice, play and travel together throughout the year. This is a special year for Ringette as we celebrate 25 years of play. Ringette began in 1963. Like all sports it has undergone many changes to rules and equip- ment, all designed to improve the game and make it as safe as possible for the girls to play. We started Ringette Week in Port Perry on Sunday Feb. 7, with "the Belles challenging the Ban- dits, a local men's hockey team to a game of Ringette. The pace was quick and trying to keep that ring on their sticks proved to be harder than expected for the Bandits. The Belles came up with-a win, defeating the Bandits 5-4. Next on the ice were the Petite B's. This was a playoff game against Scarboro, a strong rival. The girls skated hard but couldn't quite catch up. The game ended 6-4 in favour of Scarboro. : Monday Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. the Juniors challenged the R.H. Cor- nish teachers to their annual game of Ringette. No results were available at press time. Have those teachers been practising? On Sat. Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. the Petite "B's" are still hoping to ar- range something special for their ice time. Wait & see! This brings Ringette Week to a close. The executive of the Port Perry Ringette Association would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people in our.community who support Ringette. Our spon- sors, Home Hardware, Bruton's I.LD.A., Chris Allen Aluminum, Sportsland and the 1.G.A. for pro- viding their financial support to the teams. : assistants and managers for their time and dedication to the sport. We appreciate you all and hope for your continued support in years to come. The many other local businesses who support our endeavours. The parents, The coaches, - relatives and friends who faithful- ly spend many hours travelling and cheering for our Port Perry teams. Finally all the people of Port Perry who have assisted Ringette in any way, we need you all and hope for your continued support. Girls or parents wishing to become involved in the sport of Ringette for the 1988-89 season can obtain information by calling J. Lawrence or M. Fitzpatrick at 985-3690 or from any other member of the Ringette ex- ecutive. We always need help and appreciate new faces. Remember "Participate in 88." : SHOPLIFTING IS A CRIME!
