Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Family members gathered on Sunday to celebrate Bill Forder's 95th birthday which actually is Tuesday. Heartiest congratula- tions to you, Mr. Forder. It is wonderful to see Wm. out on his morning walks in the morning when the weather and walking conditions permit it. Is Mr. Forder the oldest resident in Scugog Township? Happy birthday greetings are also extended to Mrs. Carl Wright (Isabel) who will celebrate her 90th birthday this week. Mrs. Wright is a resident in the Com- munity Nursing Home, Port Perry. Excellent ice and keen competi- tion made for another excellent Robt. Fletcher Memorial Bonspiel at Blackstock arena on Saturday. After curling was over, the curlers with a number of guests gathered at the United Church for dinner and the even- ing. Dale Van Camp said Grace after which a delicious pork din- ner which was prepared and serv- ed by the mem bers of the Ladies' Curling League and enjoyed. Ap- preciation was extended by Craig Larmer. Dale Van Camp, in the absence of President Doug Kadawaki who unfortunately had to take his lit- tle daughter to the Hospital Emergency, announced that the rink of Merrill Van Camp, Shirley Dingman, Merlin Suggitt and Valerie Van Camp had narrowly eased into first place. They were: presented with the prestigious . Fletcher trophy by Scott Flet- cher. In his remarks, Scott thank the Curling Club for continuing to hold this Bonspiel in his Dad's memory. Close behind in second place was the rink of Grant and Heather McLaughlin, Neil and Kath McLaughlin. Keith and Jean Goble, Brian and Carol Gray were in third place while Scott Fletcher, Esther Kelly, Mark Graham, Diane Fletcher placed fourth. Fifth position was won by Janet and Dale Van Camp, Tracy and David Vernest while Craig Larmer, Janet Weir, Jim Weir ° and Elizabeth Luke placed sixth. Dale gave Icemakers Bob Strong and Laverne Sutton a tribute for the excellent quality of the ice. Two piggy banks collected fines for hogged rocks. Matt Hill and Merrill Van Camp won them in two draws. The evening concluded with a dart game which proved to be fun for everyone. Recently, Mel DeVries and his daughter Debbie visited former neighbours Hector and May Shor- tridge who enjoyed renewing acquaintances. - February is traditionally Heart Month. For much of her long life Hazel lived on the family farm on the 2nd Concession retiring to a home in the village. For the past few years she has been a resident of the Village at Port Perry. The Funeral Service will be held today (Monday) from the Wagg Funeral Home. Sympathy is ex- tended to her niece Shirley and Jack Simmons and their family Rodney and Leanne and to her many friends. Congratulations to Kendall Chorostecki who was invited to at- tend the Mountain Dew All-Star 'Race at Alpine Ski Club, Coll- ingwood. To qualify for this in- vitation, you must consistently . place first or second in your league races, attend all practices and demonstrate good sport- smanship. The top Mountain Dew Racers from 22 Clubs competed for the coveted Mountain Dew All- Star Award. Kendall placed 6th in the Slalom Race and 3rd in the Giant Slalom. His overall stan- ding was second place! For this he will receive a Silver medal at the S.0.D. Awards Banquet in Toronto and is invited to compete in the S.0.D. Juvenile Champion- ships in a couple of weeks. Best wishes, Kendall on this next race. In the Floor Hockey this week the Leafs defeated the Bombers 5-4. Scoring for the Lcafs were Jason Logan 2, Dillon Weber 2 and Tommy Waters 1 and for the Bombers, Brad Morton 3 and Brenda Tromans 1. In the Senior Division the Canadians outscored . the Bruins 9-6 with Mike Leach 3, John Ford 2, Peter Simms 2, Brenden Agnew 1 and Kyle Simms 1. The Bruins scorers were Daryl Dutkewich 2, Danny Bycock 2, Mike Hepburn 1 and Lyndsay Dutkewich 1. Better health is wished for Lillian Wilson in Oshawa Hospital and for Clarence Marlow in Port Perry Hospital. At the United Church on Sunday morning, Charles and Carol Hill and Arlene Malcolm of the Nestleton Church brought the ser- vice. Women's Institute by Helen Bradburn P.R.O. On Wed. Feb. 3rd, the Blackstock Women's Institute met in the Hall for the Feb. meeting. We have a few members sick and wish them the best. After dessert and tea, the meeting open- ed by. singing the Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Col- lect. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and the treasurer's report given. Thank you letters were read from the Operation Scugog, Com- munity Care and the Salvation Army for donations received. Thank you notes were also read from Julie Byers and Esther Kel- ly for cups and saucers received for completing 12 projects in 4-H. Next 4-H project will be En- counter the Outdoors. Since our adopted child has reached the age where sponsor- ship ends, a brochure was passed around telling that instead we could adopt a community thus helping more people. A card was signed for Lillian Wilson who has had surgery and is in Oshawa Hospital. Roll Call was well answered by displaying a craft we made -- we are an ambitious group craftwise. The Motto- "Busy fingers result in new creations' was replied to by Margaret Van Camp. Eileen McLaughlin gave a demonstration on making hats from plastic canvas and yard with trim for decorations. She brought supplies so those who wished could learn how to make the 'hats. The meeting closed with O Canada. Debbie and Sid Feddema and Joshua are looking very happy these days with the arrival of a baby daughter and sister. Debbie and Sid live on the farm former- ly owned by Rose and Andrea Weir and family. An Information Night will be held at the Cartwright High School this Wed., Feb. 10th at 7 p.m. It will be an evening devoted to parents and guardians of poten- tial Grade 9 students of C.H.S. Epsom-Utica meeting Utica and Area News by Vera Brown The Annual Congregational meeting for Epsom-Utica United Church was held on Sunday and the following new board members were elected to office for a three year term: Session- Alice Lee & Ralph Nottingham; Stewards- Paul Baster, Wendy Andrews and Ann Tapscott. The Annual Report showed a very busy and rewar- ding year for the congregation. Church & Sunday School will be held in Epsom Church this com- ing Sunday at 11:15 a.m. Friday evening was a blustery -night, but even so there were 8 tables of euchre played in the Hall with the following coming away lucky winners: Ladies 1st Irene Elson, 2nd Marie Geer and 3rd Velma Ross. Mens 1st Stan Dick, 2nd Hardy Noble and 3rd Hartley Chapman. Freeze-out winners were George and Rachel Harper who beat out Erma Watson and Dora Geer. Draw winners were George Harper, Irene Fielding and Rachel Harper. There will be another euchre in two weeks. The community was saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Mr. Ed Mitchell on Thursday while working at a neighbour's house. Ed was Utica's local carpenter and handy man and over the many years in the com- munity had worked on many of the houses in the area and touch-- ed the hearts of those families for which he worked. Saturday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. David Tracey & Boys were here parents Mr. and Mrs. Harry Archibald and Julie of Uxbridge and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Puckrin of Oshawa. Wally and Jean Scott of London and Dale and Karen Beare of Burlington were Sunday visitors with Mrs. Crosier. Belated birthday greetings to Miss Andrea Sutherland who was 7 years old on Thursday. On Sat. a birthday party was held in her honour at her home and attended by several of her classmates. Art and Wendy Puckrin and children of Pickering visited on Sat. evening with Doug and Judy MacSween and boys. The Annual Hall Board meeting was held on Sunday and all pre- sent members were returned to office for another year. They are Bill Brown, Stephen Aked, Doug MacSween, Georgina Sutcliffe, Bruce Houghland and Irene Fielding. Miss Laura Carre was an over- night guest of her friend Miss Janine Good in Toronto on the weekend. Recently Laura com- peted-in'the Green Gables contest put en by the Uxbridge Library Centennial committee. Although she wasn't fortunate enough to be drawn for first prize, she did win third and must be congratulated as a lot of preparation went into the contest and Laura did it all correctly, but unfortunately so did 7 others, thus the draw.
