28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 16, 1988 Australian bride Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Dale and Anita Davis returned last week from a wonderful holi- day in Australia for the past three weeks. While there they attended the beautiful wedding of their son, Peter. The newly weds visited On- tario enroute to their home in England. Margaret, an Australian girl, enjoyed seeing snow for the first time. While in Toronto, the family hosted a reception for Peter and Margaret which was attended by relatives and friends. A very special holi- day for the Davis'! Mrs. David McLean passd away suddenly on Sunday even- ing at the home of her daughter Marjorie & Herb Prescott. It is expected that funeral services will be held on Wednesday. Sym- pathy is extended to Mrs. McLean's family and friends. Neil Bailey, Neil and Grant McLaughlin enjoyed a few days' holiday in Las Vegas from Thurs. until Sunday. They report having an excellent holiday. In the Floor Hockey results in the Junior Division, the Leafs defeated the Bombers 5-3. The scorers were Dillon Weber 4, Tommy Waters 1 for the Leafs and Ronald Kelly 1, Brad Morton 2 for the Bombers. The Seniors had a high scoring game when the Canadians outscored the Bruins 10-8. Scorers for the Canadians were Brendon Agnew 3, Kendall Chorostecki 3, Peter Simms 3 and Mark Simmons 1. For the Bruins were Chris Bryant 2, Daryl Dutkewich 2, Lindsay Dutkewich 1, Mike Hepburn 1, Danny Bycock 1 and Paul Bycock 1. Feb. 9th, the After- Cartwright High news by Sharon Dyer Toboggan races, snow soccer, 15 legged races and much more. The students at Cartwright High had a great time at their annual Winter Carnival. It was a battle of brains, strength and speed as ~ the Alikats, Ookpiks and Tigers battled it out last Tuesday. Once again, the snow was the highlight of the afternoon, as the guys covered the girls from head to toe in snow between évents. In snow soccer, it was girls against guys once more. The on- ly problem was that, instead of chasing the ball, the boys chased the girls. Again, we lost! The final scores for Winter Carnival 88 are the Alikats in first place with 21 points and the Tigers and Ookpiks tied for second with 17 points each. As usual, for the Winter Car- - nival, the students crown a second and first prince and a king. This year's princes are Eric Douma, 2nd prince Rob Keast, 1st prince, and our proud Carnival King is Blair Locke. The students of CHS are selling chocolate bars and chocolate covered almonds to raise money for our musically inclined per- sonalities. It sure takes a lot of teamwork and coopera- tion to do well in the 12-legged race, but this Another fundraising venture for Valentine's Week is the selling of carnations. This is to raise money for the Outer's Club activities. The carnations will be sent with messages on Tues. Feb. 15. Each year, CHS crowns a Heart Queen. This year's nominees are Sheryl Porter, Tiffany deKnecht, Claire MacKenzie and Kris Bayley. The heart speeches and judinging will take palce on Fri. Feb. 19th. The Queen will be crowned at the Heart Dance to be held also on Friday at the Blackstock Rec Centre. Good luck to all the participants! Wallets stolen Durham Region Police are in- vestigating the theft of two wallets which disappeared from a dressing room at the Scugog Arena. Police say both wallets contain- ed cash and credit cards. They were reported missing by two Township men who had been in- volved in a late night pick-up hockey game Saturday at the Arena. Police say the lock on the dress- ing room door had been broken at the time. noon Unit of the United Church Women met in the church base- ment with thirteen ladies present. Mrs. Jean Adams acted as Unit leader in Mrs. Grace Hall's absence. After a dessert luncheon of fruit cake and coffee, Mrs. Jean Ferguson conducted the Worship Service. As Feb. includes Valen- tine's Day, Jean chose as her theme 'Love and the Ability to Love" and the Scripture reference was John 3: 16. This was followed by the singing of "Jesus Loves Me' accompanied by Jean on her new portable keyboard. Mrs. Marion Larmer, our new secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting. Mrs. Aileen Byers, our former secretary was thank- ed for her services. The Roll Call was answered by thoughts about love. Some quoted Bible verses, some quoted practical sugges- tions about living successfully while others read Valentine verses. All were enjoyed and worth further thought. It was announced that our next general meeting would be Feb. 24th in the Church at 1:30 p.m. There was some discussion about the upcoming World's Day of Prayer which will" be held in Blackstock United Church, March 4th at 2 p.m. Mrs. Marion Larmer was in charge of the program which con- sisted of an inspiring summary of the 'First National U.C.W. Con- ference' to be held at Waterloo University last summer. The theme was "Call to Respond" - Marion used slides to make her talk more realistic. The meeting closed with the singing of the Benediction, 'May the Lord, Mighty God Bless and Keep You Forever." The next meeting of the Afternoon Unit will "be held in the Church at 1:15 p.m. on March 8th. The Annual Durham East Junior Farmers annual banquet, meeting and dance was held at the Nestleton Hall. Elizabeth Kel- ly, president conducted the business of the evening. Guest speaker was .John Lester of Lind- say. Excellent music for the dance was provided by the Barrs of Blackstock. Good wishes were extended to incoming President Fred Slemon and his Executive. The Olympics is an exciting event for Canada. Blackstock can coast a citizen taking an active part in the great Sports event. Gary Beechey has the honour of being chosen as a member of the Ski-patrol. Hope to have more details later.
