12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 23, 1988 Sealed bids taken for painting Kinsmen 'blind' auction ._ Althgugh John Vandenberg doesn't have time to join a service club, he is making a special com- mittment to the Port Perry Kins- men Club in order to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research. Known both as a teacher at Port Perry High School and a dedicated artist, Mr. Vandenberg has donat- ed one of his paintings to the Kinsmen Club for use in a "blind auction." The painting, an acrylic impres- sionistic view of a landscape, called "Time Out", is on display at Port Gifts on Queen Street. The 40 year old artist says the painting can best be appreciated from a distance, where details of stones, brush and weeds can be more clearly seen. He chose the painting's name because, "I need time out! And if you look closely, you'll see trees, stones, brush, weeds--things you'd see at the side of the road if you're out walking." After viewing the painting, members of the public are invited to enter a sealed bid, by writing an amount, their name, phone number, date and time in a sealed envelope, before Friday March 4th at 6 p.m. The highest bid will secure the painting, and the purchase price will go straight to Cystic Fibro- sis research, via the Kinsmer Club. Kin member Dave Robinson also happens to be a teacher, and it was his idea to have Mr. Van- denberg donate a painting for this worthwhile cause. v "Dave Robinson suggested this a year ago, and I thought, well, why not," Mr. Vandenberg said. "I think the service clubs do an "awful lot of good work, and while I don't have time to join, this is one way I can contribute someth- ing to Cystic Fibrosis." Obviosly, organizers are hoping people will be generous in their bids because it is a fundraising venture. Mr. Vandenberg hopes so too, for the sake of Cystic Fibrosis, but he's content just to paint. It almost doesn't matter what be- comes of the painting once it is completed. He started painting 10 years ago when he sat in on a Grade 13 art class one day (he teaches science, math and French), and re- discovered his interest in art. From that point on, he hasn't looked back and has progressed through three "stages" or styles of artwork. He started out painting botanical watercolours, before turning to pencil drawings. Both were re- ceived enthusiastically by art lov- ers, and a few years ago, he had his first one man show at Scugog Memorial Library. His latest stage is acrylics on watercolour, and this too is prov- ing a successful venue His work will again be featured at the library this coming season, either in the autumn or spring. Mr. Vandenberg's work has also been featured at Town Hall 1873 and at the Durham Board of Educa- tion. This new stage isn't what he calls "typical rcalism", and al- though he paints landscapes (totally imaginary ones), they can't be compared to the likes of artists like Robert Bateman. Mr. Vandenberg's paintings are more introspective, more thought- provoking, a thinking person's landscape, to be sure. But "Time Out" is more than just a beautiful painting. It's a ve- hicle to help stop Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic discase responsible for taking the lives of more Canadian children than any other inherited disease. Canada is a world leader in CF research and treatment, and Kins- men and Kinettes have been major supporters cf CF research for more than 23 years. Last year alone they raiscd close to 40 per cent of the CF research and treat- ment budget--$1.3 million. "Time Out" is yet another way of helping Kinsmen battle this deadly disease.
