The purpose of this meeting was to discuss ways to try and save the "Big Grass Marsh," a wetland of 100,000 acres in Southern Manitoba which had been devastated by poor conservation practices and the drought of the 1930's. In the 50 years since that first eventful meeting, Ducks Unlimited, of which Ducks Unlimited Canada is a part, has grown to become the largest privately funded wetland conser- vation organization in the world. DU has in those years carried out thousands of conservation pro- jects involving millions of acres of wetland habitat. Some members of the Port Perry Chapter of Ducks Unlimited were asked what the 50th anniversary of DU Canada meant to them, and just what this organization has been doing this past 50 years. Committee man Ken Stone said, 'I don't hunt, but I've been . an outdoorsman all my life. I en- joy the quietness and beauty I find in nature. I've been concerned with the way we have treated our environment -- especially our wetlands. DU Canada has created or restored over 4 million acres of wetlands in Canada during its 50 year history. That's why I'support it. This is an organization that really gets things done." Eric Fletcher, a Cartwright High School teacher added, 'I en- joy duck hunting. There is something special about being in a blind out in the marsh on a mis- ty autumn morning. It takes me away from the hustle and bustle of our modern world. I see a world that may not be all that different from that which our ancestors ex- perienced when they were first RUA A SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR YOU FROM YOUR BIG 'V' DRUG STORE At last, perfection. And by the way'5 pro- jects that go into making up that 4 million acres Ken talked about are within only a few miles of Port Perry." Tom Worden is a committee member who is heading up the Port Perry Chapter's first "Greenwing" project. Greenw- ings are junior members of Ducks Unlimited, up to 17 years of age. He said, 'I enjoy to hunt on those rare occasions when I can get away from the busy world I live in. Perhaps it is for the reasons Eric and Ken have given, but it is also for the camaraderie that ex- ists amongst true sportspeople. They seem to appreciate the real value of our natural world, and Allen's Siding Products Itd. REACH INDUSTRIAL PARK are prepared to put something in- to trying to preserve it. This Greenwing project is a hands on approach to teaching our children in the ways they can put something back into our environ- ment. These youngsters will be building boxes for Wood Duck nests and placing these nests in appropriate locations in this area. This should encourage larger populations of this beautiful duck. Like Eric, I want my children to be able to enjoy the benefits of the natural world. That is why I sup- port Ducks Unlimited." Tom Scott, who handles publici- ty for the Port Perry Chapter, tells us that there is a proud history of DU, and much that can be learned from that history. He encourages anyone who would like to find our more about Ducks Unlimited, either individually or for a group, to contact him at his Oshawa home, telephone 723-3605.
