Port Perry has started their "best of 5' series with Cobourg beginning on Tues- day, February 23 in Cobourg. Game No. 1 of the series could be considered the game that started it all, in more ways than one. The rivalry between Port Perry and Cobourg Bantam squads have grown to be the worst rivalry our Port Bantams have ever experienced. The Cobourg squad is full of ag- gressiveness and desire with a hint of dirty play involved. While Port Perry is considered a team with heart and motivation with a touch of discipline when needed. In game No. 1 the chippiness grew and tempers blew. Cobourg, started the game off with 3 unanswered goals in the first period due to some un- necessary penalties by Port Perry. The score stood 3-0 until the first minute in the second period when Port's Ethan Lavereau popped a wrist shot in- to the top right hand corner of Cobourg's net. Chris Legere and Jarett Harman drew the assists. This closed the gap to a 3-1 score. Tykes on the trail The advanced tykes have seen more action on the hockey trail. Game No. 2 of the series were played back in Port Perry and the red and white was the only col- ours seen in this game! With a system devised by coach Todd Wilbur and the discipline of his players, Port Perry drew first blood when Jarett Harman scored on a pretty play set-up by Ethan Lavereau and Eric Grosvenor. Four minutes later, Brian Ap- pleby took the puck over the blue line and unleashed a bullet of a shot which forced its way in the net with no problem. We are going to try something new this year. Besides having 0.A.S.A. rep teams, we will also have '"B"' teams. They will be playing against Oshawa and Whitby and will be travelling back and forth. If we have the in- terest this will include girls teams as well as boys from the squirt level and up. Coaches are great- ly needed. Also this year we will be having clinics for coaches and umpires (male and female) at the beginn- ing of the season. More informa- tion will be available at registration. We have, a group of boys at Midget (17 and 18 year olds) level who are very interested in play- ing again this year, but unfor- tunately we do not have a coach for them. If anyone would like to help these guys, please step for- ward now as we do not want to lose them to an Oshawa or Toron- to team. Our next general meeting will be April 6. Please watch the sports section in this paper for dates and times of upcoming events. stood 2-0. Cobourg then got on the scoreboard with 54 seconds left in the first period to make the score 2-1. In the second, Port Perry played an outstanding period and capped it off by outplaying and scoring their opponent, by shooting the puck in and sending a winger in after it. Jarett Har- man scored early to make the score 3-1 and the assist went to Brian Appleby. A few minutes later, Scott Porter increased the lead to 4-1 with the assists going to Chris Ball and Sean Bradbury. It was then 5-1 when Brett Puckrin fired a shot from the point and it was deflected into the net by Ethan Lavereau. Eric Grosvenor also drew an assist on the play. Then late in the 2nd period Cobourg tried to start a comeback and scored to make the score 5-2. After a flood and words of en- couragement from the coaching staff, Port Perry played another great period and kept Cobourg off the board and the final score stood at 5-2 and Port Perry tied the series at 1-1. A special mention goes to Paul Kett, who played a spectacular game between the pipes. Game No. 3 of the series was played back in Cobourg. Port Perry looked tired and just couldn't get things together. The final score of the game was 5-2. Scoring for Port Perry was Sean Bradbury and Ethan Lavereau. Picking up assists were Scott Porter, Jarett Harman and Steve Staniland. The series now stands at 2-1 for Cobourg. However, Port Perry has proven themselves that with discipline, heart and desire, Cobourg can be beaten. Port Perry will be ready Monday night when they host Cobourg for the fourth game of the series. If Port Perry wins, they will return to Cobourg for a fifth game. Coach Wilbur has given his boys a chance to think things over and prepare for Mondays game by giving them the weekend off.
