i i] § ET There were bemused smiles and looks of amazement on the faces of Scugog Township coun- cil Monday afternoon when Sam Provenzano told them what he thinks of local zoning by-laws. He's the owner of Frank's Re- staurant in Caesarea, and he's been having a running battle with the Township over a by-law which forbids him to use live bands as entertainment at his establish- ment. y Armed with almost a dozen YMCA floor hockey In Junior Floor Hockey action at Immaculate Conception Catholic School on Monday, February 22, 1988, the Port Perry Blue Jays played an excellent game to beat the Beige Flyers by a score of 11 to 9. When the Beige Flyers put the pressure on to tie the game, the goaltending dual of Jamie Sauter and Martin Van Ravenswaay were able to keep the puck out of their net. Jeff Gunn was the sharp shooter for the Blue Jays by get- ting 7 goals past the goaltenders for the Flyers while Jamie Sauter, Chris Langford, Evan Bertrand and Martin Van Ravenswaay got one goal each. For the Beige Flyers, Adam Jones scored 4 goals and Kevin Pike 3 goals, each earning a hat trick while Mark Sauter and Steven Doan finished off the scor- ing with one goal each. In the net for the Beige Flyers were Jason Gunn, Mark Sauter and Eric Bird. Next game for the Juniors will be March 7 when they will host Blackstock while the games for the Intermediates and Seniors are cancelled until March 21 which is" the Monday after March Break. On February 23, the Port Perry Senior Floor Hockey teams visited the Blackstock teams at the Cartwright Public School. In the first game, the Blackstock Bruins beat the Port Perry Red Wings by a score of 5 to 3. Scoring for the Bruins were Paul Bycock and Danny Bycock with 2 goals each while Todd Moore picked up a single. Sean Sauter, Blair Prechitko and Mike Hepburn connected on one goal each for the Red Wings while Danny Brown and Mike Hepburn shared the goaltending duties. The second game of the night turned out to be a real thriller with the Port Perry Green Giants scoring 2 goals in the last couple of minutes of the game to win by the score of 5 to 4 over the Cart- wright Canadians. John Hall scored 2 goals for the Green Giants while Pat Smith, Kevin Pearce and Jamie Heayn connected on one goal each. For the Cartwright Canadians, Peter Simms scored 2 goals while Mike Leach and R.T. Ford assisted by getting one goal each. The goalies for both teams were great in their respective nets making the necessary saves when required. : In net for the Green Giants were Andrew Jones and Louis Whitfield while Kendal Chorostecki played for the Canadians. large posters on green and orange bristol board which proclaimed all kinds of alleged zoning infractions in the Township which are going un-punished, Mr. Provenzan spent the better part of an hour in ani- mated discussion with the coun- cillors. "If I'm breaking the law, what about all the others in Caesarea who are breaking the law t00,"he said in his heavily accented rapid fire English. He said there are repair shops in residential zones and school buses parked in the same zones. He even wondered why there is no sidewalk in front of the postal building. At one point, he said that if he can't bring live music into his restaurant, he might as well shut down because there are no cus- tomers. While most members of council sat quietly listening to Mr. Provenzano list his gricvanc- es, Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor tried to explain to Sam that the by-law forbids live bands. "The Township took you to court and a judge agreed with our by-law, and fined you $400," said the Mayor referring to a provin- cial court decision earlier this month, Area councillor Harvey Gra- ham said that the council over the . past year has attempted to nego- tiate with Mr. Provenzano in re- turn for the required zoning change. The Township wanted fencing put up along two sides of the restaurant and guarantees that the air conditioning in the place ~ was adequate so that doors would not have to be left open on hot summer nights when the bands were playing, PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 1, 1988 -- 43 Sam gives councillors a piece of his mind Counciiior Graham said the negotiations went nowhere and that's why the zoning was turned down by council. At one point, a couple of friends of Sam's urged him to re- consider negotiations for a fence around his property and Sam shook his head in ther negative. 'When Mr. Provenzano charged that liquor is available at the fire hall in Caesarea, Mayor Taylor angrily cautioned him not to make allegations he can't prove. : Mr. Provenzano told the council he is going to take his fight to the Ontario Municipal Board for the re-zoning for live bands. Following the conviction for breaking the zoning by-law earlier this month, Scugog Township has threatened to lay more charges if bands appear at the restaurant. And the judge has warned him that future convictions on this charge will result in the maxi- mum fine of $1,000. Tough luck for the Sportsland Juniors On Saturday February 20, Sportsland Juniors travelled to Campbellford, for the Prelims for the Provincials. Our first game was at 9 a.m. Sunday morning, against Mariposa. Mariposa were quick to score their 1st goal, but the Port Perry girls were not long in tying the game. All the girls played well, coming out of this close one, win- ning 6-5. Scoring for Port Perry were Michelle Beare 3 goals, Kelly Calloway 2 goals, Lisa Levy 1 goal, 2 assists and assists going to Sylvia Durward 3, Rachel Traynor 1 and Nicole Slack 1. The second game of the day was against arch rivals Whitby. This was a hard played game, with lots of penalties for both teams. Everyone played a good game, but unfortunately that wasn't good enough and the Por girls lost this one 10-7. Scoring for Port.were, Lisa Levy 3 goals, Kelly Calloway 2 goals, 2 assists, Michelle Beare 1 goal, Nicole Slack 1 goal and 2 assists each to Rachel Traynor and Melissa Moehring. Our third game came at the end of a very long day. Everyone was aware that Whitby was the team going to Sudbury for the Provin- cials. The girls seemed to have lost their edge for this game against the Pickering team, los- ing this one 7-3. Scoring for Port were, Michelle Beare 3 goa..., with 1 as...t each going to Kelly Calloway, Cindy Harris and Cathy Coutoulakis. Sunday, February 28 the girls had an exhibition game, with the Midget hockey team. The girls lost 7-1, but sure got lots of skating - practice. Thanks guys for coming out to play Ringette. Just 2 playoff games left in the season, but times or who we play are not known yet. AUCTION SALES -- SATURDAY MARCH 5 SALE TIME: 10:00 A.M.
