~~ 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 8, 1988 MoJacks-Chiefs square off in final series The Port Perry MoJacks and the Lakefield Chiefs will square off in a best of seven series to de- termine the champion of the Crowley Division in the Central Junior C Hockey League. Game one 1n this series will be Sunday, March 13 in Lakefield with faceoff at 8:00 PM, and the second game will be at the Scu- gog Arena Wed. March 16 at 8:00 PM. Game three will be March 18 in Lakefield at 8:30 and game four will be in Port Perry March 20 with faceoff set for 7:30 PM. The MoJacks earned a berth in the final series after sweeping three straight games in the round robin, while the Chiefs clinched a spot for themselves in the final by dumping the Lindsay Muskies 3-1 last Friday night in Lindsay. That was a do or die game for the Muskies, and the loss elimi- nated any chance for them to ad- vance to the final series. The Muskies failed to win a game in the round robin. Had the Muskies won Friday night, they would have played the MoJacks at the Scugog Arena on Sunday night. However, since Sunday night's game was mean- ingless to both teams, the Muskie management decided to forfeit the match, and the MoJack team man- agement agreed. But it will mean a long layoff of 13 days between games for the Molacks. While this will give a few injuries a chance to heal, it may also take the edge off the MoJacks. Junior C fans in Lakefield and Port Perry should be in for an ex- cellent best of seven series. The Chiefs finished first over- all in league play, and they are the all-Ontario Junior C defending champions. The MaJacks finished second in their division behind the Chiefs. Counting playoffs, these two teams have met six times this year, with each winning three times. The MoJacks nipped the Chiefs 7-6 in both games played in the round robin series. The MoJacks made it three ~ straight wins in the round-robin series last Wednesday night at the Scugog Arena when they nipped the Chiefs 7-6 in front of the larg- est crowd so far this season. And it was a victory which assured the team a berth in the best of seven Division champion- ship series. The story of the game for the MoJacks once again was Number 22, Rob Baker, who scored three goals, assisted on another, and generally made life miserable for Chief netminder John Cole every time he stepped on the ice. Baker has been on a scoring rampage in this series, and has netted the winning goal for the MoJacks in the first three games. He has seven goals and three as- sists, and has had at least that many quality scoring chances. Early in the first period against the Chiefs, Baker threw a stiff shoulder check into Chief captain Chuck Freeburn, and a few minutes later, Freeburn threw an elbow at Baker, picked up a minor penalty, and Baker popped in a power play goal. The MoJacks appeared to be taking control of the game early in the second when Craig Menzies converted a goal-mouth pass from Baker and then steve Ashby tipped a puck across the line for a 5-3 lead. But a series of MoJack penal- ties late in the period allowed the Chiefs to cut thc margin to 5-4, and they kept coming in the third with two straight markers to take a 6-5 lead at the mid-point. But the power play clicked once more for Port Perry at 12.55 when Rob Metcalfe knocked down a shot at the Chief line, fed the puck to the side of net where Dave Burnett and Len Giacalone Friday. The RH Cornish girls team went on to win the championship 23-19 over Leslie McFarlane School and claim the crown from all Durham Region Major Schools.
