PYRE rn SL I 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 15, 1988 The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce celebrated a birthday last week: 100 years of service to customers in Port Perry and area. The local CIBC branch at the corner of Queen and Water Streets was brightly decorated for the oc- casion March 8 and a large rib- bon was cut to mark the 100th birthday. Several people took part in the ribbon cutting ceremonies in- cluding manager Jeff Fell, assist- ant manager Fred Hamilton, loans officer Karen Acton, and customer services officer Grace Pargeter, who has been with the bank in Port Perry for 25 years. Special guests were Tom Kil- loran, senior vice president of CIBC, Ward 2 councillor Howard Hall, and Mrs. Marguerite Brock, who snipped the ribbon. Mr. Fell said Mrs. Brock was asked to participate in the ceremo- nies because the Brock family business has been a bank custom- er in Port Perry for many years, and this was "our way of saying thanks to all our customers who have been with us over the years." The Commerce moved to the new building eight years ago. For the previous 51 years, it had béen located just a few doors west on Queen Street, in the building now occupied by Standard Trust. It was on Tuesday, March 6, 1888 that a branch of the Western Bank of Canada first opened its doors in Port Perry. A decade later, the Canadian 'Bank of Commerce opened in Port Perry as well, and in 1909 rising interest rates and falling prices resulted in a merger be- tween the Western and the Stan- dard Banks. In 1928, the Standard and Commerce banks merged, and a Bank looks good for 100 years old year later the Commerce opened at 165 Queen Street, where it re- mained until 1980 when the new large, modern branch was com- pleted. In those five decades, there were more changes. In 1932, the bank took over the business of another bank in Port Perry in a swap for Commerce customers in Port Dover, and it also absorbed the bulk of the business at the Blackstock branch, which closed in 1935. Several decades later, in 1961. the Canadian Bank of Commerce merged with the Imperial Bank of Canada, and both Imperial and Commerce were retained in the corporate name. As a memento of the 100th anniversary, the local branch had "wooden nickles" made up which were given to the customers last week. i; A Yu 3 5 ¢ a i x The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce celebrated a birthday March 8, 100 years of service to the people of Port Perry and area.
