ORT PERRY from my heart 177 QUEEN STREET, PORT PERRY 183 QUEEN STREET, PORT PERRY (416) 985-8234 Ice fishing should cause no concern According to a Ministry of Nat- ural Resources spokeman, the number and size of fish being caught this winter in Lake Scugog should be no cause of concern to local residents. Paul Drysdale, a fish and wild- life supervisor with the MNR told council Monday morning that careful monitoring this past win- ter indicate that the average size of pickerel being caught is about fif- teen and a half inches. This figure is based on about 280 fish that have been sampled this past win- ter. Mr. Drysdale appeared before council at their request to answer questions regarding the problems of parking around the lake, attrib- uted to ice fishermen; and the amount of garbage being dumped or left on the lake. PARKING In regards to parking, Mr. Drys- dale suggested there is little the Ministry can do to help as they own very little property around the lake, other than the foot of Scugog Island, which they do not keep clear during the winter. He suggested that the heaviest concentration of ice fishermen seems to be just off Caesarea, and between Goreski and West Shore Marinas, and agreed that there were very few areas for fishermen to park their vehicles. In trying to help council with a solution to the parking problem, Mr. Drysdale suggested that in the Bay of Quinte area, where ice fish- ing has become very popular re- cently, farmers have set up "private parking" areas on their own land, and then rent spaces at $2.00 per day or $25 per season to fishermen coming into the area. Councillor Cochrane, who was acting Mayor at Monday's meet- ing, indicated that there was not too much chance of that happen- ing along the Honey Beach road as most of the residents along the road do not really want the fisher- - men on the road at all. Other councillors agreed, saying that they lioush the idea was a good one, but they had already thought of that as a solution. GARBAGE In reaction to councils concern about the amount of garbage be- ing left on the lake, Mr. Drysdale said that he did not feel the situa- tion was near as bad this years as it was about five years ago. "It appears that people have be- come a little more environmental concious", he told council, while also admitting there are always ex- ceptions to the rule. Since 1975 over 2,000 ice hut permits have been issued on Lake Scugog, but on average between 500 and 650 huts are the most on the lake at any one time. "This past season we have registered 640 huts (at the peak of the season) and we have had very few com- plaints about the garbage", Drys- dale said. Council members reacted saying it was they who were getting the complaints, that is why they asked to meet with the MNR. Mr. Drysdale said that they have had officers on the Lake between three and four times a week all winter and they do not feel that garbage has been a problem. "There will probably be more gar- bage left on the lake when the huts are being taken off, as a lot of wood gets frozen into the ice and is impossible to get out", he told council. FISH SIZE The other concern brought for- ward by council was the apparent decrease in the fish size. "I have had local people suggest that maybe ice huts and/or ice fishing should be banned from the lake" Councillor Christie said. Mr. Drysdale assured council that the MNR carefully monitors Lake Scugog and that there is no fear of "fishing-out" the lake. "We - have no concerns", he said. Monitoring over the years indi- cates that winter fishing on Lake Scugog is not having any nega- tive impact on on the lake, and it can support the extra fishing with no problem, according to Mr. Drysdale. In fact, he said "the small fish indicate that there is a good number of new fish coming into the system which will grow in the next couple of years. In reaction to the suggestion of banning ice fishing on Lake Scu- gog, Mr. Drysdale indicated that he felt they were over-reacting, and he did not feel that the situa- tion was so bad as to have it re- moved altogether.
