A former employee with the Central Seven Association in Port Perry has lodged complaints against the organization with the Human Rights Commission and the Employment Standards Branch on the grounds of wrongful dis- missal. Pam Ellis, who worked as a residential counsellor for about a year, is claiming that her dismis- sal last May 28 was a result of her being four months pregnant. Mrs. Ellis, who lives with her husband and young daughter, told the Star last week she is eek- ing re-instatement to her old job with Central Seven, back wages and some kind of an apology from the Association. She admits that realistically, there is not much chance she can get her old job back even if the Human Rights Commission or Employment Standards rule in her favour. And she said that "going pub- lic" with her story at this time has become a matter of principle with her. Mrs. Ellis has contacted several newspapers and has spok- en to womens groups. In June 1986, she took a full time position as a residential counsellor at the Smith House on Scugog Island. In May of 87, when she was four months pregnant, she was asked to take a transfer to the Central Seven residence on Dur- ham Road 8 known as Carlan House. She told the Star she was very reluctant to accept this transfer be- cuase the residents at Carlan House are younger, stronger and aggressive and she feared for the physical safety of her un-born baby. She said Central Seven was informed that she would be taking maternity leave in late September when the baby was due to be born, and she told the Star she would have accepted the position at Carlan House once her baby was born and the maternity leave over. -- to let our customers know our -- NEW HOURS of BUSINESS 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM However, on May 28 last year, after working two days at Carlan House, Mrs. Ellis claims she was asked to resign or be fired. She was given two weeks severance pay, but said she was not given reasons for the dismis- sal. She believes she was dis- missed because of her pregancy and it was on these grounds that she lodged the complaints. Her case is now under review by the Employment Standards Branch of the Department of La- bour and the Human Rights Com- mission. Central Seven executive direc- tor James Duncan told the Star last week that Mrs. Ellis was dis- missed "for cause" which had nothing to do with the fact she was pregnant and due to take ma- (Turn to page 6) N&R BUSINESS SERVICES 436-9817 Services to Business Corporate & Individual %* ~ Tax Planning & Preparation * Bookkeeping * Payroll * Consulting Services to Individuals, Corporations -- CALL-- RICHARD LOWE, M.A.B.A. Director & Chief Consultant n Fashion % PORT PERRY PLAZA 985-0129
