Region seeks to prolong dump The life of the Scugog landfill site on Regional Road 8 could be extended by up to two years, if the provincial Environment Mini- stry gives its approval. Durham Region, which oper- ates the landfill site in Scugog, will ask the Environment Mini- stry for permission to place an- other lift of garbage at the dump. If the provincial Ministry says yes, it will extend the life of the dump 18 months to two years, and give Township resi- dents and businesses some breath- ing space before they are hit with paying a lot more to get rid of garbage. Without that permission, the dump will be filled to capacity by the fall of next year, and Scugog garbage will have to hauled for dumping elsewhere, likely at the Metro owned dump in Pickering. Scugog councillor Lawrence Malcolm, who suggested that the Region scck permission for an- other lift at the local dump, said he is hopeful the Province will give the approval within the next three to six months. He said that once the dump is filled, there may be a transfer sta- tion set up for household garbage, but the cost of haulage for home- owners and commercial business- es is going increase dramatically. Vol. 122 No. 22 Tuesday, April 26, 1988 Copy 50¢ 56 Pages The Durham Board of Educa- tion released its 1988 budget of $234.9 million; a $21.9 million, or 9.3 per cent increase over the "previous year. Salaries and wages will ac- count for just over $19 million of the budget increase. The budget, which was pre- sented to trustees Monday even- ing, will mean an average tax in- crease (residential) of 9.83 per cent for educational purposes. For Scugog Township home- = owners, the average increase is slightly higher at 10.8 per cent. Homeowners in Scugog this year will pay $237 for each $1,000 of assessment, up from $214 last year. The value of the average home in Scugog for assessment purposes is about $3,000. So the budget will add about $70 in addi- tional public school taxes this year, for the average property. It could be several weeks be- fore Township residents find out what the total tax bite will be in 1988 as the Durham Region bud- get is currently on hold, and Township council will bring down its budget this coming Monday. The Regional tax hike for Scugog residents will likely be in the ten per cent range, while the local (Scugog Township) increase is believed to be about six per cent. Just over 50 per cent of the School Board budget this year will come from municipal taxes; | Education taxes up over 10 % in Scugog 45 per cent from the provincial government, and the remainder from fees and rentals. The budget points out that the provincial allocation for grants as a percentage of total operating costs is 6.8 per cent less this year for secondary schools and 1.14 per cent less for elementary schools. The Board this year will spend $137.8 million on elementary schools, an increase of $13.7 mil- lion; and $97 million on secon- dary schools, an ingrease of $9.6 million over 1987 figures.
