Self help support group Self-help is a way to deal with problems that everyone faces from time to time. Illness, divorce, the death of a loved one, hit the lives of almost all Cana- dians. As well, many of us face emotional upsets or strains caus- ed by changes in our home, our job, our family situation. Talking these problems over with other people who have lived through them can help us cope with today's difficulty. It can also help us learn how to deal with tomorrow. The Port Perry support group is an outreach programme of C.1.V.P. which provides an oppor- tunity for people with emotional problems to share their feelings with others, develop friendships, enhance their communication and/or life skills, combat loneliness and boredom and learn to use community resourges. The format is that of a self-help group with one or more resource per- sons acting as facilitators. The support group is provided every Wednesday morning bet- ween 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.in. at the Scout Hall, by the kind per- mission of the Kinsmen. Statt persons consist of Elaine Arsenault, C.I.V.P. administrator and Lynn Morrall, senior occupa- tional therapist from Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. Mrs. Mor- rall is acting as consultant and resource person to the group. Anyone interested in further in- formation is welcome to call Elaine Arsenault at the Com- munity, Care office - 985-8461. PPHS students in science test A team of grade nine Port Perry High School students has been invited to participate in a continent-wide Computer Science Contest that will be held in Fair- fax, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.) this May. The students are: Jenny Crawford, Tom Rowett, Ron Rankin, Matt Shepherd, Heather Couperthwaite and Karen Wilson. The team has been writing related contests since November and their high standing to date resulted in this invitation to the ALL-STAR contest. One of the students, Jenny Crawford, has a perfect score so far. Considering that these students have had lit- tle previous experience in com- puter programing and computer technology and they are com- peting against schools from throught the United States and Canada, their achievement is something we should be proud of.
