Edwards named chief of Durha Former Deputy Chief David John Edwards has been named new Chief of the Durham Region- . al Police Force. He will be appointed Chief of Police Designee on May 1st; he will be become Acting Chief of Police on September 10; and he will become Chief of Police De- cember 1, 1988. Superintendent Doug Bulloch will take over as Deputy Chief. September 10 will be the last day on the job for retiring Chief Jon Jenkins, 58, a career police officer who started with the Oshawa Police Force in 1954, and has been the only Chief of Dur- ham Regional Police since Re- gionalization in 1974. Chief Edwards, 45, has been a Cadet and an officer for the past Van catches on fire An Oshawa man was unhurt af- ter the vehicle he was driving lit- erally erupted in flame. Durham Regional Police say Timothy Bell, 30, was headed north on Regional Road 57, north of Concession 1, on Saturday April 30. At approximately 4 p.m. the engine of his 1987 GMC van caught fire and within seconds en- gulfed the entire engine. Luckily, he pulled over and es- caped injury. -Scugog Hall No.2 (Caesarea) firefighters responded to the call and doused the van, which is a write-off. He started out with the Oshawa Police Force in 1961 as a Cadet, and later became a Consta- ble with the Traffic Squad. Since that time, he has worked in every branch of the force, with the exception of Chief's staff. He was instrumental in starting up both the Youth Bureau and the Criminal Intelligence Branch. The appointment of a new chief by the Board of Commissioners of Police (including Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor) was the sub- ject of much speculation on be- half of everyone connected with the force. Some suspected the Board might hire from outside the ranks of the force, but most insiders be- lieved the Deputy would land the job. So it was really no surprise to anyone Thursday April 28, when Board Chairman Bob Attersley an- nounced who would be replacing Chief Jenkins. The announcement was made at the Whitby headquar- ters, in a lavish press conference complete with hors d'oeuvres and a bar. More than a couple of hun- dred co-workers (in full dress uni- form), family members and friends also attended. In his announcement speech, Chairman Attersley said, "In se- lecting Chief Edwards, the board felt very honoured and proud to have such a person so well quali- fied to fill the position required. "His leadership ability has been acknowledged regardless what branch of the police service he has been deployed to," Mr. Attersley said. "Chief Edwards has proven on many occasions evidence of flexibility and open-mindedness which is greatly required in the police service today. But at the same time, he is alert, intelligent, patient and self-controlled. He has great ability to listen and dia- logue. Taking all these factors into consideration, he has the en- ergy, courage and guts when self- confidence is sought." "The Board fully realizes that a Chief of Police is a person who is on display in a glass house at all times," he added. "It is so impor- tant that his behaviour habits be ones that leave very little room for criticism. Chief Edwards beha- viour habits are those which the Board is justly proud of. We know full well his loyalty to the Board will be second to none. "I am facing them with a little apprehension and a little nervous- ness," he said with a slight smile. Police "But I'm sure with all your sup- port I will be able to maintain the high standards the Durham Re- gional Police presently enjoy." In closing, he thanked Chief Jenkins for all he had taught him, for his support and his advice in the past--and in the future. "He's guaranteed me he's not go- ing to go too far away," Chief Ed- wards said about his predecessor. On Thursday April 28, a much awaited announce- ment was made at Whitby headquarters, naming Dur- ham Region's new Chief of Police. Former Deputy Chief David John Edwards (left) will replace Chief Jon Jenkins, who has become an institution with the force. See story for details.
