Cornish School had a brief but fascinating glimpse of the underwater world of film- maker John Stoneman. Mr. Stoneman, owner of Mako Films and co-producer with the popular CTV program "The Last Frontier," spent part of an af- he 4 ternoon last week showing slides and fielding an endless stream of questions from the grades three and four students. He's been a diver for almost - 30 years, and in making his films, he has travelled to every corner of the globe from the polar ice cap to the jungles of South John Stoneman, film-maker and producer of the popular TV series "The America. His company, Mako Films, produces more underwater films than any other in the world, and "The Last Frontier" is one of the most successful Canadian produc- tions on the CTV network. He calls himself a conserva- tionist, and he is a director of the Last Frontier" gave an interesting talk and slide show to a large group fo students last week at R.H. Cornish School. The Foundation uses the hump-backed whale, an endan- gered species, in its crest. Over the years, Mr. Stoneman has developed an expertise as a "shark behavior specialist," and not surprisingly, the young stu- dents were very interested in his work with sharks. He suggested that sharks are not very well understood by man and they have been poorly por- trayed in Hollywood films. There are more than 300 spe- cies of sharks, but only about 25 of those species are known to have attacked or bitten humans. Mr. Stoneman admitted that he has been bitten once by a shark, "but it was my fault, not the shark's. He was telling me that I was in his way." His work in hand-feeding sharks was actually a one-time ex- periment to study what he termed "the body language of sharks," to see what sharks do when they are angry and feel threatened. And he said at least one species of shark will demonstrate clear signals (shaking its head, arching its back) when agitated and angry. Another segment of the slide show dealt with his work in the ice flows in the Gulf of St. Law- rence filming the baby harp seals and their mothers. These baby seals, with their pure white coats are no longer hunted the way they once were not Loo many years ago. Because of the very cold water and air temperatures, baby harp seals will gain up to 20 pounds each week for protection. They spend most of their first couple of weeks on the ice flows alone while their mothers hunt for food. Though they are good swimmers at this age, they are vulnerable if they fall into the wa- ter through an opening in the ice because they are not® strong enough to get back onto the ice. Several of the slides showed Mr. Stoneman and his colleagues in the frigid waters rescuing seal pups that had fallen into the frigid walters. Judging by the number of stu- dents eager to ask questions, they are fascinated by the oceans and the creatures that live there. Mr. Stoneman said he enjoys talking to young students because of their interest and their willing- ness to ask so many questions. He told the Star that once he used to spend a fair amount of time talking to school groups, but his schedule doesn't allow it very often these days. His address to the students at R.H.
