12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 10, 1988 Nifty little machine made right here in Port Perry Litter Hogs really gobble up that garbage Picking up trash by hand could be a thing of the past, if Steve Zimmerman's idea takes-off. Mr. Zimmerman is a Port Perry businessman who has turned the drudgery of garbage clean-up into an art, and his new product is be- ing lapped up by municpalities throughout Canada, U.S.A, Japan and Europe. Simply called the "Litter Hog" this relatively new machine, which looks much like a space age golf cart, can all but end the nced for manual trash pickup in - parks, buildings or municipali- ties. In fact, it is so efficient, the ~ This is the assembly area at InnoVac's industrial site in the Carlan Park. Above, Steve Zimmerman can be seen with about a dozen of the "Litter Hog's" they are currently working on to send to market. It takes about one month to man- ufacture 10 of these specialized garbage' collectors. WESTSHORE MARINE's CATO of the WEEK! . i UP TO 975. Mr. Zimmerman and his wife Star (that's short for Starlet) have lived in the Port Perry area for the past four years. Prior to getting involved with the Litter Hog, Steve commuted back and forth to Markham where he was vice-president of a large commercial, electrical manufactur- ing firm, Although he is still involved with the firm, about a year ago, after purchasing the world-wide rights to the forerunner of the Lit- ter Hog, he started devoting his entire time to his project under the company name InnoVac Inc. BUYS WORLD RIGHTS The orginal design was invented by a Keswick man, who sold it to Mr. Zimmerman in December 1986. For the next four months Steve worked on completing the design and getting the appropriate patents for his machine. Exactly one year ago, in a va- cant unit at the Carlan Industrial Park, Steve and Star set up shop and began to produce and market their elaborate vacuum cleaner. All of the metal fabrication, and hydraulic assembly took place i in this small plant. But in one short month they expanded into a sec- ond unit and began to produce the fibre glass bodies and mouldings, and added a paint booth. Then about seven months ago they realized "they necded even more space and they now have three units. In the third unit they have commenced an assembly line, where up to a dozen Litter Hogs can bc assembled at onc time. InnoVac hires about 20 employ- ces and is always looking for young, aggressive people to work in the plant. Mr. Zimmerman says he tries to hire a much local help as possible, but depending on the trade he needs, sometimes has to go out of the town. Presently there are about 10 Lit- ter Hogs built per month in the - Port Perry plant, but he has had as many as 50 stored over the winter waiting for the spring/summer market. GROWING COMPANY Steve proudly points to a map of Canada and the U.S.A. on his office wall which is covered with pins indicating where he sales and markets the Litter Hog. He is presently reprented coast to coast in.Canada; has 21 dealers locations in the U.S.A, and a full time U.S. Sales Manager (Spike Nagel of Whitby); and has two large trading companies represent- ing him in Japan. In addition to these lucrative markets, Mr. Zimmerman is now setting his eyes on markets in Eu- rope and Austalia, and has even re- named the Litter Hog to the Litter Pik in countries like India, Saudi Arabia and Iran where the word "hog" is not appreciated. All of this is being accom- plished out of about 6,000 square fect of space in a small Port Perry industrial plaza under the watchful eyes of Star (Starlet) as the Cana- dian Marketing Manager, and Steve who handles the off-shore markets. Cost of the amazing little ma- chine is $16,000 Canadian, less than the wages many cities would pay for one person to clean up parks and buildings. NEVER SATISFIED But Steve is never satisfied, and is currently working on a special project for the new Toronto Sky- dome. In fact, he already has a contract to furnish four larger models of the Litter Hog to help in the clean-up of the Skydome following ball games, football or whatever else may cause the tons and tons of litter in the stadium. In addition to the Skydome, he is negotiating with the U.S. gov- ernment to supply all of the Re- serve Basis in the U.S.A. with the Litter Hogs; and also has started to work with many major Airlines to set up a program to help them keep their runways and jet-ways clear of garbage. One concern in the near future may be the necd to expand, and Steve says when this becomes nec essary he is seriously considering opening a satellite plant some- where in one of the southern States, and possible even in Eu- rope. But Steve and Star are having a love affair with Port Perry, and for this reason do not want to move from the area. Steve says he would like to keep the head office here in Port Perry, and continue to build Litter Hogs as well as do all of his research and development from their present location. Although the price of the Litter Hog may be a little steep for a small township like Scugog to absorb, there is no doubt that this rugged little machine would be a real benefit to this, or any com- munity cxperiencing the fight against the "litter bug".
