They will definitely succeed in their wishes if all goes to plan. How's a 10 member dance troupe performing the incredible "Lion Dance" for different? How about a display of Oriental replica artifacts? How about murals that feature the Great Wall of China? Danielle Cliche and Vicki Wil- son have outdone themselves in planning for this year's Port Perry At-Home, the annual community prom, to be held Friday May 13 at the high school. "We wanted something differ- ent," Danielle admitted. She wasn't quite sure what "different" meant until she glanced at some photographs her father had taken on a business trip to China. "I saw his pictures and thought we could do a lot with it," she said. So work began last summer, with a trip through the Toronto OPEN TO PUBLIC SAT. 9 AM to 2 PM 75s Desig of quality FIBREGLASS BATHTUBS and WHIRLPOOLS Empress Yellow Pages, picking out appro- priately Oriental-sounding busi- nesses like a Buddhist Church, the Dragon City Mall, and the Japa- nese Cultural Centre. Twenty-five places were selected and letters were sent out to them, asking for help and advice. "We've had a lot of response," Danielle said, explaining that most of the attractions at this year's At-Home stem from those original contacts. The Taiwan Students Club, for example, set the girls up with the Canadian Student Services of To- ronto. It was this latter group that agreed to provide the Lion Dance, a colourfully unique traditional dance similar to the famous "Dragon dances" seen around the time of the Chinese New Year. - The dancing promises to be spectacular, however brief (only 15 minutes). The show starts at 9 p.m. so everyone going to the At- Home is encouraged to be there 80 VanEdward Drive Port Perry 985-3100 THE REGIONAL a MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM PUBLIC NOTICE Take notice that the Regional Municipality of Durham is consider- ing a proposed by-law to name portions of various Regional Roads within the former Township of East Whitby, now in the City of Oshawa. - Yow UNIHIB SF 3CuGos 27%; x FR OEE) £3 2 £3 3 TOWN oF WHITBY NCTE 3 or i romata CITY Cnt -- ciTY oF OSHAWA TOWN NEWCASTLE ON RR ag RS ion In order to assist in the evaluation of the proposed by-law, the public is invited to provide input by way of submissions to the Region's Planning Department. These same dancers performed at Toronto's City Hall in February during Chinese New Year celebra- tions: As for dccorations, well, Da- nielle and Vicki are promising an absolute feast of Oriental beauty with huge murals, lanterns, repli- ca artifacts, and some surprises. The artwork is being directed by former P.P.H.S. student David Stokes, a graphic design graduate from George Brown College, and present P.P.H.S. student Craig Venning, who runs his own busi- ness on the side, called Lateral Graphics. "I'm biased in saying this," Da- nielle said with a grin, "but I think it's going to be pretty good this year." Everyone in the community is invited to attend the Shangri-La At-Home, not just students. "The At-Home is really for the town, and every year the town doesn't really want to get in- volved," Danielle pointed out. She's hoping more people from Port Perry and surrounding area will attend this year--if for no oth- er reason than to refresh the tradi- tion of community At-Homes-- and to see the Lion Dance. Tickets are $16 a couple and are available from the Port Perry High School front office. % Danielle Cliche (left) and Vicki Wilson have been busily collecting Oriental decorations and artifacts in preparation for this Friday's At Home formal dance at Port Perry High School.
