te (From page 29) can help. If you happen to be up at the hospital sometime during this week, let the nurses know that you appreciate them, and the work thev do. By having a week dedicated to nurses, RNs like Bev Brown are hoping the public becomes more aware of the problems that nurses face. The following letter has been re- printed from the ONA Newsletter, but it originally came from the Calgary Herald, where it first ap- peared January 29, 1988 in the Letters to the Editor section. It's a particular favourite of many of the nurses at Community Memorial. Dear Editor: The public is now and then treated to a story about an individ- ual who, with a unique approach and with the help of the media, __objains gainful employment. I work as a registered nurse and 1 am requesting your help to find a new career. At first, I wondered what else I could do, as I have only ever been a nurse. However, with some thought, I was able to compile a short list of things I am presently qualified and expected to do as a nurse. Somewhere out there in the land of "Jobs" there must be an em- ployer who is searching the ads for an employee. I could be it. 1 have 15 year experience in the workforce: *First, I am willing to spend weekends, Christmas, Easter and other holidays away from my fam- ily and friends. It is alright for me to miss supper and evenings with my family and my husband does not mind sleeping alone for about one quarter of the year. I will ar- rive early and leave late. *I am agreeable to providing a work uniform, if necessary, and do not mind if it gets soiled and Patient May Reynolds says she doesn't like having her picture taken, but she admitted, "I'll do anything for the nurses!" Above, she poses with RN Barb Farmer. Lo WALLPAPER WONDERS PORT PERRY PLAZA -- 985-0509 SAVE 30% of All Wallpaper Book Orders stained. "I am also an excellent masseuse." *1 don't mind a dirty job, get- ting my hands dirty. In fact, | have been up to my elbows in it, if you know what I mean. I am also an excellent masseuse. *I work well with the public and can smile throught most any difficulty. I am able to accept ver- bal and physical abuse from a small sector of the public and maintain my cool. *I have worked through eight hours without a lunch break or a bathroom visit on the rare occa- sion, without complaint or request for overtime. *I have a good working knowl- edge of math and measurement and have been known to figure out some fairly complicated medica- tion dosages. I have been taught to double-check my work and have never made a medication error, which proves I am a conscientious worker. *I have experience in quality as- surance, material management, problem solving, and will come in on my day off (with pay) to do audits. I am also willing to sit on committees to help your organiza- tion run smoother. My knowledge extends to ordering, filling out forms, filing and stocking shelves. *I can move furniture and am especially good at pushing beds, bedside tables, footstools, and overbed tables. *1 have telephone, receptionist and concierge experience.' *A Stevedore's job might be what I am looking for. I can turn, move and lift bodies of various weights and mobility and just the other evening threw four heavy laundry bags and two large gar- bage bags, weighted with garbage, with ease. *I could try a bouncer's job. I am very persuasive and have been required to tactfully remove people from areas and situations-- -possibly a job in sales? "I'm not afraid to be in the same room with death.' *I work well with a multi- deaprtmental situtation and work well as part of a team. I take and follow orders well. *1 am adept at cleaning and can provide references for being seen out and about pushing a mop and a bucket. *] am an entertainer. Appearanc- es to my credit have been singing a a small babe to sleep in the wee hours of a cold, dark night and causing an unhappy, hurting child to smile. *I can write legibly, have a working knowledge of English and Latin and can be trusted with top sccret and confidential reports. My daily work requires I handle legal documents. *I have leadership skills and | \ \ t Wo n A ora?
