INI EE I HI ems ia iat PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 17, 1988 -- 9 World competition Eight members of the Birdseye Centre Carvers Club travelled to Ocean City, Maryland for the World's Carving Competition on April 22-24. Of these people we had 5 people take ten ribbons. Ron Lace entered 5 birds and won three firsts and 2 seconds, John Carnwith took a third, Frank and Isabelle Hedges who are a carving couple took a first. Frank does the carving and Isabelle paints these creations. Ed Bowler, our new club presi- dent, won 3 honourable mentions with his 3 birds. If you ever get to see a competi- tion of this level you will realize how well our small club has done. The competition was extremely tough this year with some 2,000 entries from all over the world. Canada has done well however, the top carver in the world was a Canadian this year, and that is good considering that the U.S.A. is ahead of us in this area. The competition is put on by the Carving club wins big! Ward Foundation in Maryland and if you win 1st prize in the top category you must sel] your bird to the Foundation for $20,000.00. These birds are then put in a museum to be kept for everyone's enjoyment forever. Carving can be a great source of satisfaction to many people. Lessons are available for the beginner as well as the advanced carver. You will probably find that if you get into carving, you never finish learning. We welcome new members. We meet the second Tuesday of each month at the Prince Albert Hal! at 7:00 P.M. We are planning a big show and competition this year in conjunction with Festival Days. Our show will be Saturday, July 16th. I am sure you would en- joy seeing these fabulous pieces of art and meeting our members.
