Community Support Team helps young people in trouble A Community Support Team, composed of professionals involv- ed in the Young Offenders net- work, has been established by the Oshawa and District Family Court Clinic, at the request of the Ontario Ministry of Community & Social Services. This is the first of several similar programs to be established in the Province. The team, which will serve the area which includes Durham Region, and Kawartha, Halibur- ton and Northumberland Coun- ties, was established as the result of an initiative announced by the Ministry in May, 1987, to provide community support services for youth in conflict with the law. The program is directed at those Young Offenders who are con- sidered high-risk, such as youth with conduct disorders; youth in conflict with their families; youth committing sexual offences; youth who do not function well in the school system; and youth who are considered a threat to the community by their continued in- volvement ih criminal behavior. Jolyne Gritzner, Executive Director of the Oshawa and District Family Court Clinic, says, '"The Community Support Team can offer a total approach by working together to prevent Young Offenders from requiring secure services, and by reintegrating them back into the community. The program will augment existing community pro- grams, providing individual, family and group treatment, training in valuable life skills and preparation for employment, and consultation with custodial, deten- tion and foster home staff." Surveys done in September, 1987, showed that approximately 500 youths were either on proba- tion or in some form of custody in this area. It is anticipated that the new program will provide the means for Young Offenders to in- teract more positively with their families, their peers and the com- munity, and at the same time in- crease community awareness of the problems of youth. With a May 1, start-up date, the -program's budget for start-up and the initial year is $421,000. For the entire project in Ontario, the Ministry of Community & Social Services is providing $1.2 million. An Open House will be held at the Family Court Clinic premises on May 17, 1988 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 17, 1988 -- 29 Scugog men's lob ball league Name T Pts Galley Fish & Seafood 1 1 0 0 2 Port Perry Auto Glass 1 1 0 0 2 "Port Perry Old Timers 1 1 0 0 2 Square Boy Pizza 1 0 1 0 0 Seagrave Steel Buildings 1 0 1 0 0 A.
