RITA RTT ARRON, PORT PERRY STAR Solid pitching leads to three straight wins PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 14 1988 -- 27 SPORTS 8 The Greenbank Gamblers claimed first place in the Oshawa City and District league "A" divi- sion last week by winning three consecutive games. On Monday night in Greenbank Park the Gamblers had to come from behind to edge Stouffville Betz Pools by a 4-3 score as the Greenbank team scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 Stouffville lead. Wayne Wells was on the mound for the Gamblers to oppose. John Annis and Jim Chilvers (who Little Britain had the bats working in fine order Sunday afternoon as they defeated Seagrave Systems by a handy margin to win the Conso- lation final at the Parks Board tournament In Seagrave. The Pirates earned $300 for their efforts. Sixteen teams entered this popular annual . tournament. Team still un-defeated in regular league play Gamblers perched on top of pack relieved Annis in the sixth inn- ing). Wells allowed six Stouffville hits and struck out seven to claim the victory. Stouffville had the lead twice during the game but Greenbank kept coming back to eventually emerge as the winner. Trevor Till led the Greenbank attack with a pair of hits with Rodd Real, Gary Baker and John Foster each hav- ing one hit. Steve Brooks had two hits for the Stouffville team. On Wednesday night the Gamblers travelled to Oshawa and behind the four hit pitching of Mark Goreski they shut down the Oshawa Ace team by a 3-1 score. Greenbank were never behind in this game as they scored a run in the second inning and two more in the third and that was all Goreski would need as he set down the Oshawa hitters in every inning except the fourth. In the fourth inning Dan Logeman hit a triple for Oshawa and eventually came around to score but that proved to be the only run that Oshawa could muster off Mark Goreski. Trevor Till and George Red- shaw each had to hits off Oshawa pitcher Steve Crummy while Terry Till and Gary Baker round- ed out the Greenbank hitting. Thursday night saw the Gamblers in Port Perry to play an earlier rained out game against the XL Eagles. In this game Wayne Wells and Lawrie Williams were the opposing pit- chers and the game headed into the seventh inning with the teams deadlocked at two runs each. But in the top of the seventh in- ning Greenbank catcher Dennis Ewart drew a base on balls and moved to third when the Eagle in- field misplayed Terry Tills T hekdp sien sacrifice and then scored the win- ning run on an infield out. Wayne Wells retired the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning and the Gamblers had their sixth successive win in Oshawa City and District league play. Terry Till had three Greenbank hits with Dennis Ewart con- tributing a pair of safeties. John Foster, Don Beaton and Greg Rodd also hit safety for the Gamblers. Picking up the base hits for Port Perry were Ken Bryant, Robert Evans, Lawrie Williams, Jay Williams and Dave Dickson. A mild controversy occurred in the sixth inning when a long drive into right field by Don Beaton that appeared to clear the fence was ruled a ground rule double by the umpire and the Gamblers were unable to advance Beaton past third base. The game was well played by both teams in spite of the cold, windy weather that prevailed during the game. Hopefully good fastball weather is just around the corner. Next week the Gamblers enter- tain the Oshawa M.C.L. Jrs. in Greenbank Park on Monday night and then make their first ap- pearance of the season in Stouff- ville on Wednesday night.
