8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 14 1988 Editorial (From page 4) ures, we would all live longer, healthier lives. One physician at the conference is quoted as saying the medical profession has become a manager of dis- ease. : Regular exercise, DOr) diet and nutrition are the keys to leading longer, healthier lives. That's not exactly startling news. Meanwhile, the provincial government will be pump- ing some $21 million. About $20 million of that will go into expansion of heart surgery units at major hospitals in Toronto, London and Ottawa. That leaves $1 million for an education program to tell people how to avoid heart disease through proper diet and non-smoking. We are not going to quibble with the money going into the heart units for more surgery. These units are needed. But maybe if the government spent a little more on education, it might in the long run, be able to spend a little less on treatment. Originally, the boundary was to be MacDonald Street, which meant that all Pert Perry students living north of that street would attend the new school when it opens. However, area superintendent Bob Martin told the Star last week that the MacDonald Street bounda- ry had been designated when the Board had planned for the school to be built at the Fairgrounds and when it was to be a Kindergarten to grade 6 facility. That has changed. The new school will be K-8 and will be built on Simcoe Street, about one-quarter mile north of the Fair- grounds. When asked if the Port Perry boundary will be established fur- ther north than MacDonald Street, he replied very likely it will. Construction is scheduled to start this September with the completion date in time for stu- dents to start ¢lasses the following September. It will have about 480 stu- dents, and some will be in porta- bles. At an information meeting last week attended by about 60 parents, many wanted to know way a new school would open with portables on site. The reason is the different ways the Durham Board and the Ministry of Education calculate the number of students in a class- room. The Ministry's guideline is 35 per class. In reality in Durham Region, there are fewer students than that in each class. The school design will be similar to one already completed in Whitby and another under con- truction in Pickering. One new feature will be a day care centre, part of the provincial government's policy to establish moré day care spaces in the prov- incé. The new school has yet to be given a name, but a committee of trustees is working on that. Scugog trustee Joyce Kelly told the Star last week she has re- ceived several suggestions for a school name, and the committee would welcome more before a fi- nal decision is made. and History. tion exercises. per year.
