12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 28 1988 A first for Ryan Ruskay Shodan-Ho at age twelve | I | It From Bowmanville to Welland and all points in between, Ryan Ruskay 1s a stand-out. At 12 years old, Ryan is the youngest person, in the entire area, to be awarded Shodan-Ho status and his temporary black belt in karate. The articulate young man, with a shock of blonde hair and a shocking number of karate medals has done something entirely re- markable. His instructor, Sensei Rob Dodds, is extremely proud of Ryan and of the massive amount of work the young Caesarea resi- dent has put into his favourite sport. But nobody's as proud of Ryan as his parents Ron and Roseann Ruskay, and little brother Neil (who at 8, already has two years in the Port Perry Wado Kai Karate Club). It was Roseann who actually first interested the family in kara- te--her family was involved with the sport long before she even married Ron. And so when Rob Dodds started the Port Perry club five years ago, Ron and Ryan signed up. "I remember you saying I should build up my muscles," Ryan says to his Dad during an interview with the Star last Fri- day. Ron ruffles his son's hair and confirms that, indeed, they both signed up at the same time--and both have been hooked on karate MN 7777777777777777727777 77777777 7777/4 CLL lr A rl ll 7 BAND CONCERTS Thursday, July 7 - 7:30 PM LINDSAY COMMUNITY BAND NN a Sunday, July 17 - 2:00 PM FESTIVAL DAYS "TATTOO" Parade Starts 2:00 PM from PPHS to Bandstand FRIDAY, JULY 1 - 2 PM PORT PERRY LEGION DRUMHEAD SERVICE For further information contact: Dave Durham 985-2285 A A A A A A A A A RRRRREEEESESESSSSSSESSESSY NN Doubles & Singles DART TOURNAMENT -- at -- BARLEY MOW PUB (Latcham Centre - Port Perry) SAT., JULY 16th, 1988 REGISTRATION to 10:00 AM TOURNAMENT starting at 11:00 AM FEE: $5.00 PER PERSON Registration Forms available Mi at Emmerson Insurance Brokers S Tournament being co-organized by Louanne and Bob Brown and Old English Dart Supplies. His wife adds, "I think Port Per- ry has the only group that's really family oriented." So not only was the twice weekly classes (Tuesdays and Sun- days at the Latcham Centre) good for the Ruskays physically, it was also a good chance for father and son to do something together. "I thought it was pretty good," Ryan recalls of his first feelings towards karate. "It was interesting and fun." But as fun as it was, he never figured he'd still be involved five years later, with Shodan-Ho status under his temporary black belt. - . "It's a lot of work, and I've had to come a long way," Ryan ad- mits. He says the sport takes and teaches patience, determination, courage, and above all, discipline. Ron, who has the same status as his son, says nothing about ka- rate is easy. "It takes total coordi- nation. Adults learn more patience and kids watch their parents and learn, hey, I'm as good as he is." - And although they practise to- gether, Ron and Ryan don't com- pete in the same category. Tourna- ments are divided into under 16 or over 16 years old. All three Ruskay men have earned more than their fair share of medals. Roseann Ruskay would love to take part, but she's too busy doing other things--like run- ning Ryan from one place to an- other with karate and all his other activities--Ryan was once Cub of the Year in scouting, and also is involved with drama and music at Cartwright Central Public School, (Turn to page 20) Ryan Ruskay, at only 12 years old, is the youngest karate student from Bowmanville to Welland to ever recelve his Shodan-Ho status and temporary black belt. The smiling Caesarea resident Is pretty modest about his accomplishment, but the public can see his skills first-hand during a Festival Days when Ryan and his club, Wado Kai of Port Perry, demonstrate their sport.
