Scottish exchange student - - -_ enjoys summer in Canada Jennifer Halley has found Canada pretty much the way she expected it would be, except for a few things. The 22-year old member of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers is currently on summer-long exchange in Canada, her first ever trip to this side of the Atlantic. She spent last week staying at the Blackstock area farm of Don and Marjorie Green after a week in Northern Ontario and one in La- ily in Wellington County. In an interview with the Star last Friday afternoon, Jennifer said she's impressed with Canada, ex- cept for the mosquitos, violent thunderstorms, and the fact that most of the young men seem to sport beards and/or mustaches. Jennifer's family operates a large Holstein farm (170 milking cows) in the community of Lark- hall on the River Clyde, about 15 miles outside of Glasgow. She has worked actively on nark County. From her observations in Canada, she said there are many similarities between farms here and those in Scotland. Farmers in Scotland don't gow corn, however, due to the cooler damp climate. And for some rea- son, she's not sure why exactly, Canadian beef cattle and sheep ap- pear to have longer legs and are taller. "Maybe for climbing over snow drifts in winter," she joked with a laugh. Like farms in Canada, those in Scotland are big business these days, and very expensive for somebody just starting out. Scot- land went to a milk quota system in recent years, and new quotas are almost impossible to obtain. And the value of farmland, es- pecially near the cities and larger towns, has gone up dramatically. Her father has been offered about $900 per acre for the poor land, not for new housing, but for forests, as there is a shortage of softwood in Scotland. She said top land would be worth much more than that. There is a lot of history to the farm where her family lives. Her father bought the land 11 years ago from the Duke of Hamilton, though he had farmed it for years prior to that. And it was on this farm that the famous Clydesdale heavy hors- es were first bred many years ago. Jennifer arrived in Canada with a delegation of Junior Farm- ers from the United Kingdom and Australia on May 27, and they will be returning home August 22. They will have a couple of weeks in August for touring west- em Canada on their own. While much of her time is spent visiting farms and talking to farmers and organizations about agriculture in her native land, she's also taking in the tourist at- tractions of Ontario. She's an avid sports fan (soc- cer, rugby) and hopes to be able to take in a Blue Jay baseball game.
