At local schools Childrens' achievements are highlighted Epsom and Area News by Jean Jeffery Our most interesting news this week is from the school. The achievements of the children is so important. They will take our lace soon and we want them to well prepared. Art awards were presented to Travis MacSween, Twyla Halli- day, Lindsay Gower, Ardon Crowder, Evan Gower, Mandy Schaal, Tanya Wilson, Jason Cooper, Dayna Ballagh and Paige Florence. Four children from Epsom Public School had work publish- ed in the Electric Circus - a Durham publication highlighting children's literary efforts - Graeme Powell, Daniel Lee, An- drea Sutherland and Ardon Crowder. Several children were representatives at a Literary Con- ference held at Epsom Public School and Uxbridge Public School. Christy Trotter, Jordon McKay, Christy Mahlberg, Graeme Powell, Angela Chann- ing, Shauna Simmonds, Paige Florence, Samantha Diotte, Mat- thew Saunders, Andrea Sutherland, Daniel Lee, Ardon Crowder, T.J. Flood, Diana Terlouw, Joel Van Veghel, Evan Gower, Lea-Anne Parish and An- drea Walley. Many children received tabs for running in the 50 KM and 100 KM Club. Of special note were Aaron Combdon and Travis VanKessel both of whom ran 150 KM. ~The Tony Goslin Memorial Sportsmanship award was presented to Bradley Hawker. Utica Farm Equipment Science Award went to Christy Mahlberg. The Roland Armstrong award for the hardest worker in Grades 1 and 2 was presented to Andrea Sutherland. The hardest worker award for Grades 3 and 4 went to Amy Irving. ) The Jeffrey Begin Memorial Trophy presented annually to the Epsom Primary student sikkens demonstrating the most effort and determination in school life went to Aaron Crowder. The Epsom Downs trophy donated by Don and Fay Sim- monds was presented to the best all-round primary student - Lind- say Doble. Linda Fockler presented volunteers with certificates of ap- preciation and thanked them for their help during the year. Beth Wilson representing S.A.C. presented Cathy Hamilton with a parting gift from Epsom Community and thanked her for her efforts at Greenbank and Ep- som Public Schools over the past three years. Citizenship tabs were awarded to the following well deserving students: Travis MacSween, Aar- ron Crowder, Ardon Crowder, Joel van Veghel, Tanya Wilson, Jill Stroud, Bradley Hawker, An- drea Sutherland, Joel Thomson, Paige Florence, Lindsay Doble and Anna Evans. : The cross-country awards went to Christy Mahlberg, Anna Evans, Katie Collins, Travis van Kessel, Bradley Hawker, Evan Gower, Adam Andrews, Aaron Combdon and Ardon Crowder. These special awards were presented at Greenbank Public School June 27. Then visited Yvette Hebert of North Bay, stopped and called on Peggy Baker, Sundridge and Doug Ross of Orillia. On returning home Mrs. James Harris of Toronto visited Mrs. H. Ross for a few days. Garry Royle is enjoying mom's cooking again. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Pickett of Deep River were visiting Mrs. Greenbank area news Gladys Evans and family recently. Mr. Darryl Leigh and Miss Wendy Evans attended the 4H Regional Conference at Trent University. Rural youth of the area participated in the agriculture display at Canada Day, Lakeview Park, Oshawa. On Sunday, Doug and Beth Wilson and family visited with Keith and Anne Wilson at their cottage in Orillia. Paul and Bradley Ashton stayed with Grandma Ashton. Our sympathy to Joyce and Allen in the passing of her stepmother Mable Strong. Service will be on lawn The service next Sunday will be held on the south lawn followed by a pot luck picnic lunch. Bring a lawn chair and a rug, a straw hat might make it more comfortable if the weather is very warm. There will be races and games for the children. Ladies, it is getting to be Barbecue time and your help is always needed also those good pies. The U.C.W. ladies hope to have a bazaar table at the barbecue. Mr. Glen McKean, Calgary called on Mr. and Mrs. Don McKean last week. Mrs. Marian Jermey and boys spent a few days last week at the home of her parents Mr. & Mrs. J. Couperthwaite. Picnic is on Ju- ly 12th at Elgin Park, Uxbridge with pot luck lunch at 12:30 p.m. A number from Greenbank were guests at the Gibson-Smith wedding in Oshawa on Saturday. Mr. & Mrs. Armour McMillan called on Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Wilson, Balsam, one day last week. Mr. & Mrs. Don McKean visited Mr. & Mrs. Larry Treleaven and family, Barrie, last Saturday. Mr. & Mrs. Murray Lee had a few days rest at Aston Resort in Muskoka last week. News next week 985-2924. 'The Greenbank Orioles hosted their annual invitational tourna- ment on the weekend with eight teams competing for top spot. The most exciting game of the tourna- ment took place Saturday night between the Greenbank Orioles and the Greenbank Hillbillies. At the end of the first inning the Hillbillies managed to take the lead with two runs with the Orioles only scoring once. The RT Hs a Sa game was neck and neck right up to the end with the game going in- to two extra innings. In the first extra inning, the Hillbillies managed to get three up, three down. With the Hillbillies at bat, there was one out, and Phil Ber- trand on third base but they couldn't escape the Orioles ex- cellent defensive tactics and end- ed the inning with Phil still on third. In the top of the eighth Earl Phoenix, Dave Giannini and Jim Ward scored for the Orioles, mak- ing the score 14 to 11 in favour of the Orioles. The Hillbillies still had a bat left but the Orioles shut them down and won the B semi- final 14 to 11. The championship games took place Sunday with Seagrave Steel Buildings winning 6 to 5 over Square Boy to take the C division championship. The Orioles went on to win the B divi- sion against Sportsland 12 to 1.
