Sales Manager: RON MENZIES "Res. 985-3252 Res. 852-7321 Manchester 985-0743 USED CAR DEPARTMENT oan SieREMA by John "Wally" Nesbitt As a famous Motorsport personality once said "it was a grreat grreat day for a Mota Cah Race!" And it really was a fine sunny day on Ile Notre-Dame as the Grand Prix Circus came to Montreal. With the complete domination of the Formula One Season, thus far, by the McLaren Team it came as no surprise that, when qualif was completed, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost sat side by side on the front row. In grabbing his fifth pole position in as many tries this year, Senna knocked more than three seconds off of the old lap record. Averaging almost 192 kilometers per hour around the twisty Montreal circuit. : The twin Ferraris of Berger and Alboreto made up the se- cond row with Alessandro Nannini in the normally aspirated (non 'turbocharged) Benneton sitting beside reigning world champion Nelson Piquet in the fifth and sixth spots. When the green flag waved on Sunday afternoon, the red and white Marlboro McLarens showed that they were right on form as first Prost and then Senna led the field in an unfair game of catch-me-if-you-can. The Ferraris were able to stay close until mechanical gremlins forced both cars out before the half way point. After that, the only car that could even be mentioned on the same lap was the Benneton Ford of Thierry Boutsen. And that's how the race ended one hour and forty minutes later with Senna leading Prost by six seconds to claim his second victory of the year. Boutsen, with an excellent drive in a non-turbo car was third, a minute in arrears. Nelson Piquet, Ivan Capelli and Jonathon Palmer rounded out the top six, all picking up points towards the World Championship. In seventh spot was Derek Warwick who although he received no points in the race earned full marks for competing after surviving a spectacular crash on Saturday which demolished his Arrows Racer and left him with bruised ribs and strained neck muscles. The best news of the weekend for Montreal came when it was announced that the Federal Government and the Quebec Tourism Ministry have allocated three million dollars to guarantee the running of the Grand Prix at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit for the next five years. We'll be back. The Honda Michelin cars shared the track with the Grand Prix Machinery on Sunday and it was a case of 'I Won - No You Didn't - Yes You Did" for Geoff Chandler. Starting third on the grid, Geoff took the lead on lap two and led to the checkered flag dicing all race with Bill Clubine. However, after the race Chandler and Clubine were both penalized 15 seconds for pass- ing under a yellow flag and Clubine was additionally penalized one minute for jumping the start. Thus the winner's hat went to Jock Addison. But, of course we have an appeal and on June 18 the penalties for passing under a yellow were rescinded and Geoff Chandler was officially declared the winner. The C.A.S.C. appeal board upheld the jump start penalty to Clubine thereby relagating him to eleventh place. Jock Addison was awarded se- cond place, Peter Cohen third and Chandler's partner in the Ackland's Honda Team & Terry Di Francesco was fourth. In the Players General Motors Motorsport Series Race that was run on Saturday it was Ron Fellows claiming the $5500 first prize money. second in the Powell Motorsports Camaro was Marc Dancose and third place went to Shannonville's Richard Spenard. The second Esso Protec car of the Powell Stable driven by Robin Buck laid claim to fourth spot with Quebec's Lindsay Riddell finishing fifth. Next week both of these series will continue at Mosport while the Grand Prix moves on to Detroit. The Rothmans 200 Weekend, held at Mosport June 17-19 will have to go down as one of the quickest racing weekends ever seen at the happy track. There were seven series run during the course of the weekend and - Who'd A Thunk It - seven new lap records. : The feature event of the weekend was the return of the H.F.C. Formula Atlantic Challenge. The series is considered the step- ping stone into the big time for professional race drivers. Names you may recognize that have graduated from the ranks of F.A. are Gilles Villeneuve, Jacques Villeneuve, Keke Rosberg, Bob- by Rahal and the 1986 Champion, local driver Scott Goodyear. And this weekend we saw some of the stars of the future. Steve Shelton set a new lap record this weekend and was the pole sitter for this event. Next to him on the grid was Colin . Trveman. His Father, Jim, was a very successful race driver, manager and team owner and Colin is following very capably in his footsteps. Next up was last year's rookie of the year John Thompson and sitting fourth was Scott Harrington of Louisville, Kentucky. Jeremy Hill of Toronto was the top Canadian with the twelfth fastest time. When the green flag at the start of the race, the track was very hot and very slippery but that didn't stop Shelton, who had to make an engine change Saturday night and Colin Trveman from playing rabbit with the rest of the field. Trveman snuck past Shelton on the third lap to take the lead that he would hold to the end of the race, but he did have a few anxious moments. The clutch on the Budweiser Swift of Trveman's broke on the opening lap and while it posed no problem when he was racing, a caution period that brought out the pace car for six laps could have meant the end of the day if he had to stop his car completely for any reason. Luckily for Colin the track was quickly cleared and he was able to carry on for his first victory in the Formula Atlantic Series. Following, about four seconds back. was Steve Shelton in second place and Eric Lang, of New York City rode to third. Jeremy Hill had a disappointing day as his car stalled on the starting grid and he was forced to retire. It was great. Mosport will be quiet for a while but there's lots of racing action elsewhere in July and we'll tell you about it the next time you hear 'From Corner Five." 9
