Merchant display contest Vote for your fave store Instead of voting for "Sexy Men & Women" this Festival Days (July 14 to 17) everyone's invited to vote for their favourite decorat- ed store instead! The downtown core of Port Per- ry will be divided into three sec- tons for judging. The north end, from Dennis Anderson's Chev/ Olds to the Linen Corner will be Medieval England. From the Royal Bank to Stan- dard Trust will be Victorian Eng- land. And the Water St. area will be transformed into Piccadilly Square. Merchants within those areas will be participating in costumes and decorations within those themes, and will be judged by all of us--at a penny a vote! If you're in a store you really Education director Mather resigns next year The Durham Board of Educa- tion is looking for a new director. Trustees were caught off guard June 27 when Bruce Mather an- nounced that he will be stepping down next February when his cur- rent five year contract expires. Mr. Mather, described as a "people person," told the Board meeting he likely will seek new challenges in the private sector. The 54 year old Toronto na- tive came to Durham after spend- ing five years as director with the Hastings Board of Education. He said he believes "I have ac- complished as much as I can. I've reached certain goals" (with the Durham Board) Former Board chairman Ruth Lafarga described Mr. Mather's contribution to education in Dur- ham over the last five years as an "A plus." like, simply drop some coins in a voting booth (each store will have one) to let everyone know how much you like their effort. All the votes (money) will be counted, and on Saturday July 16 at 6 p.m. (at the Gazebo in Palm- er Park), the winners will be an- nounced vided into two categorys, for mer- chants with one to 10 employees - and 10 and over employees. First prize in each category will be $250--enough for the boss to take all his staff out for dinner! All funds raised by this event will go back to the Chamber of Commerce to help pay for all the PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 5 1988 -- 5 Prizes for merchants will be di- fun at Festival Days. When students at Port Perry High School return to class In September, a couple of well known and fami- lair faces won't be there. Secretary Gwen Taylor and teacher John Scott have retired with 25 and 27 years of service respectively. Both said they have no par- ticular plans for their retirement other than to "take it easy," and do a little travelling. Mr. Scott will be play- ing some golf and tennis, and writing a bit of poetry. Both worked for four principals and six vice principals during their years at PPHS. Staff held a retirement party for them early in June. 139 WATER ST. « 6 HIGH STREET -- with this coupon -- SAVE! 50.00 on any one windshield insurance claim WE ACCEPT ANY COMPETITOR'S COUPONS 985-8507 -- MOBILE SERVICE -- GUARANTEED WORKMANSHIP ye rs fe A GR RS FEE AT CREE TRE DEA ORE BS aan iy BOER I RE I LTS Historical Walking Tour of Port Perry Four walking tours of the town of Port Perry will take place this month under the very capable guidance of local history buff Paul Arculus.
