f 4 Girl lucky to escape ~~ with minor injuries LA Tg a i perme a aS teem ET RO AR il En SEN ------t (From page 3) called off, and police began to look for the missing man. Finally, at 9:45 that night, a man was arrested at Oshawa Gen- eral Hospital, where he was being treated for minor injuries. David Wannamaker, 27, of Oshawa, was charged with theft over $1,000 and mischief endan- gering life. According to police, the suspect brought the girl to Goreski's for a boat ride--she allegedly had no in- dication the boat would be stolen. Police say he started the boat without turning on the blowers. As a result, gas fumes accumulat- ed, and sparks from the engine blew the boat up as it was back- ing out of the slip. Betty Bauder's trailer faces the slip and she saw the whole thing. "We heard the explosion, and af- ter hearing one before (a couple years ago), we knew it was a boat," she said. Mrs. Bauder watched as Lenny Goreski rushed to the scene and towed the flaming craft to a safe distance away from other boats. She called him a hero for his ac- tions. "It looked like the whole top was in flames," she added. "It's a really frightening thing." Scugog Hall No. 1 Firefighters were called, but the fire had pretty much already destroyed the boat, owned by William Shephard of Blackstock. . He estimates the craft, made in 1968, was worth in the neigh- bourhood of $25,000--and he's not sure if insurance will cover the loss. The boat was Mr. Shephard's pride and joy, and his family used it just about every weekend in the summer--he's kept it in the same slip at Goreski's for the last eight years. He was in Montreal when police phoned with the news and he was more than a little angry. "I wasn't too happy," he under- stated. Mr. Shephard says he has no idea why his boat was chosen by the thief, and has never met the suspect before. The boat was completely de- stroyed--only a metal frame sur- vived. Two days later, July 15, both Scugog Fire Departments respond- ed to another boat fire each. The first happened at approxi- mately 11:30 a.m. on Lake Scu- gog, at the Beacon Marina in Cae- sarea. Scugog Hall No. 2. (Caesarea) doused what was left of the flaming 19' craft. Captain Greg Hewson said the boat was destroyed, and warms oth- er boaters to leave the blowers turned on for at least five minutes before starting the motor, to pre- vent fire. The second boat fire on Friday happened at the top of Scugog Is- land at approximately 2:30 p.m. A couple from Burketon had just started their boat and returned to their car to pick up a few things, when the craft exploded into flames. Captain Don Steele said this boat, a 21' inboard, was also de- stroyed, to the tune of $15,000. No one was injured in either in- cident. Lease for Blackstock Fair Board rejected A proposed lease agreement between the Township and the Blackstock Agricultural Society (Fair Board) was rejected by coun- cil Monday afternoon because councillors felt the wording was too restrictive. Councillor Lawrence Malcolm - said the lease was too binding and By-law officer (From page 2) ing more money to get an experi- enced person. "We need a by-law officer, and if we have to pay . $30,000, we'll just have to pay it," he stated. Ward 1 councillor Yvonne Christie suggested that if Scugog is going to pay $30,000 for the position, the person should be ~ given more responsibilities than by-law enforcement, and the posi- tion should be declared manage- ment. Council opted to try and find a suitable applicant by advertising in the Li y area. Whether the starting salary will have to be increased to offer a person with working experience will be decided later by the coun- cil. Mr. Cuddie told the meeting that Scugog is not the only mu- nicipality having trouble finding by-law enforcement officers wi working experience. And the com- munity colleges which offer courses in the field have waiting lists of people hoping to get ac- cepted. restrictive on the Township. "There could be some very se- rious problems (with the wording) in the future," he said. The proposed lease for 20 years would give the Fair Board the right to use the municipal lands for the annual Blackstock Fair the last Saturday in August, and for other events and activities such as the annual Tractor Pull just completed this weekend. Although the Blackstock Fair has been using the municipally owned facilities, (land and build- ings) for years without any prob- lems, some members of the Fair Board felt it is time to have a proper lease agreement with the Township, especially in light of the controversy two years ago over the Port Perry Fairgrounds. "The Fair Board wants a writ- ten guarantee that it has use of the grounds for the Fair," said area councillor Harvey Graham. Township administrator Earl Cuddie said the wording of the lease was designed to maintain what the Fair Board in Cartwright has always enjoyed when it comes to the land and buildings used for the Fair. Council suggested that some new wording for an agreement be- tween the Township and the Fair Board be drawn up by councillor Malcolm. He agreed to come up with new wording and clauses in time for the next council meeting in two weeks. Don't waste this space.
